Ford Motor Company: Friend or Foe?

By Jody Czapla

We have all seen those commercials where the Ford Explorer or full size pickup is heading up a hill or out tearing around the country side not exactly Treading Lightly! Well, guess what folks, Ford Motor Company just gave 5 Million dollars to the Audubon Society. That's right everyone. The very same organization that is trying to close our roads and reduce recreation opportunities and has been for years.

I have worked hard to keep trails open in my area for a long time. I work with the Colorado Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs on land use issues in the Northern District. I have enough of a fight on my hands without a green group receiving that much money to fight me. I am not a lawyer nor am I rich. I do this as a volunteer. None of us have that kind of money to fight back.

I need your help with this matter. It not only affects me. It affects all that want to have a place to use those 4x4's we have built for recreation. I ask you to make a simple call to Ford Motor Company and place a complaint. It is easy to do. It will not take more than 10 minutes of your day. What is less than 10 minutes compared to 10 years of having trials to drive??

If you love to 4 wheel, make this call. The number is 1-800-392-3673. At the first prompt hit 3. At the second prompt hit 2, then enter your 10 digit telephone number. Talk to the Customer Service representative and tell them you object to Ford Motor Company donating money to the organizations working to close your access to recreational opportunities. They will ask you for name, address and phone number. For those who are hearing impaired, the number is 1-800-232-5952. If you want to write them a letter, you can send E-mail to: or if you prefer snail mail, send the letter to:

Ford Motor Company
Attn: Jack Nasser
16800 Executive Plaza Drive
P.O. Box 6245
Deerborn Mi 48121

Take less than 10 minutes out of your day to make this call. If we put enough pressure on this company maybe they will think twice before this happens again. Maybe next year they will give the 4 wheel drive clubs money. We can always hope.

We have stood united before and we can do it again. It doesn't matter where we are from. This affects all of us; so, let's do something about it.

Remember, at some time we will all pass away and leave a heritage for our kids. I would like to leave something for them to do in the outdoors besides look at it from a distance and say, "Oh, isn't that pretty! I wish we could get closer!"

Thank You,
