Public Comment: PWC Use in Delaware Gap National Recreation Area

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is accepting public comments until July 31, on whether jet skis and other personal watercraft (PWCs) should be allowed in the recreation area. Currently, jet skis are permitted in only two areas of the recreation area: the Smithfield Pool and the Price's Landing Pool, however Price's Landing is accessible only to nearby residents.

I understand that currently, jet skis are permitted in only two areas of the recreation area: the Smithfield Pool and the Price's Landing Pool, however Price's Landing is accessible only to nearby residents. I believe that both of these areas should remain open to jet skis and other personal watercraft. A considerable amount of false information is being perpetuated about toady's jet skis and personal watercraft being high polluters. A recent confirmation with indicates that toady's jet skis and PWC are cleaner than the average family sedan. Personal watercraft have been attacked as having an abysmal safety record. In fact, the jet skis and other PWC are designed with many safety features that make them safe when operated in a responsible manner. Perhaps the "abysmal safety record" is in truth not the PWC but the operator that has been in under the influence of intoxicating substances or children operating without adult supervision. The Delaware Gap National Recreation Area is an area set aside for multiple use recreation in a controlled area. Forest Service and National Park estimates predict a significant increase in the recreational use of public lands and waterways. Currently, about 11% of the vessels registered in the US are PWC. When operated in a responsible manner, these craft are compatible with the charter of the national recreation areas. With proper signage, education and enforcement, PWC are no more of a problem than any other motor vehicle. Please continue to provide a venue for this type of recreational use of the Delaware Gap National Recreation Area. Thank you for this opportunity to submit comments. Sincerely,
