BUILD YOUR CLUB A TRAIL ETHICS/COMMON COURTESY LIST AND HELP SAVE OUR SPORTS!

One primary way to save our sports and keep our trails open is to always set a good example for others...especially for those who are not members of organized recreation and might not know the rules of the road.  Your club or group should have a list of rules/ethics to play by.  It's not a hard thing to build (the list) and it just takes education to get folks to follow along.  Well, some folks might never get it and they just need to be busted by the law if needed.

January 2013 Highlighted Landuse Issues/Links from Team Albright

This landuse update comes to you from Del Albright, Outdoor Recreation Advocate

January 2013 Highlighted Landuse Issues/Links from Team Albright

1.     Johnson Valley, the Hammers – PLEASE sign the petition needing 1000 signatures a day, to request the White House to deny any request by the 29 Palms Marine Base to use land from Johnson Valley OHV area for base expansion.  We love the Marines; but they don’t need our OHV area.   Go here to sign:  http://ultra4racing.com/featured/1000-signatures-a-day-needed-to-help-save-the-hammers/.

2.     Oregon – comments needed on Oregon Dunes Designated Routes Project DEIS, right away.  Best coastal dunes around are in jeopardy and need our help.  Your letter can make a difference.  BRC has a sample letter here: https://www.sharetrails.org/alerts/2013/01/15/oregon--comments-needed-on-oregon-dunes-10c-designated-routes-project-deis.

IS GOVERNMENT LISTENING TO THE USERS?

WORRIED ABOUT THE RUBICON TRAIL?

I left my leadership position in Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR) and the Rubicon Trail Foundation (RTF) a few years back, thinking that we had laid a positive foundation to continue these incredible efforts to keep the Rubicon Trail open to all of us...all year; for all types of rigs; with challenges for us all.

NOT THE CASE!!!

I am sorely disappointed in the way the trail has changed in the last few years, and I am not afraid to step up and say that government is NOT listening to the users.  Not in this case.  Something is wrong and we need to bring some slap down on the deaf ones who "govern" our use of public lands in the case of the Rubicon Trail.

Legal-Ease 101: What is Intervention in court (and why)?

You may have heard about one of our off-road groups "intervening" in a court action.  This is not the same as filing a lawsuit.  Herein we will explain what it means to be an "intervenor" in a court action, and why it is an essential part of our access efforts.

Legal actions can be described as offensive and defensive.  To intervene is a defensive maneuver that can save the day for us, by ensuring we have a seat at the table when recreational decisions are made.

Rumbling of Thunder

Rumbling of Thunder - A Whole New Sound in the Off-road World

The over-paid, seldom-right weather man spoke with such animation and excitement that you couldn’t help but get taken in by his rambling analysis of the on-coming weather pattern (from outer space).  But he had me from hello when he mentioned the "rumbling of thunder” and how we would be hearing it for some time to come.  I realized at that moment he had just described the new sound I’ve been hearing in the off-road skies – thunder!

Thunder is the sound made by lightning, ranging from a sharp loud crack, to a long, low rumble.  I don’t think there is any one reason for this “storm,” but rather a culmination of people getting fed up with unnecessary closures and restrictions.  Can you see the lightning and hear the thunder?
