Welding Rod Numbers Decoded

This can be easily decoded.  Note:  A welding rod that does not have an "E" on it is classified as oxy-fuel welding rod; not for use with a "stick" or arc welder.

"E" stands for "Electrode"

The first two digits (or first 3 if it's a 5-digit number) are an abbreviation of the weld's strength. To determine the strength of the weld, take the 2 digits, in this case 60, and multiply by 1000 to get the weld strength in PSI.

So, if you had welded two plates together, with the weld covering one square inch (or even 1/4" x 4", that's still one square inch) that weld could take 60,000 pounds of pulling force.

Typical vales are 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110.

Winches and Shackles

The innovators at BubbaRope have introduced a “soft shackle”, the GatorJaw.  This item is made from Plasma rope which is the highest synthetic rope available featuring a breaking strength of 32,000 lbs which makes them stronger that steel shackles.  Long used in marine environments, the light weight GatorJaw shackles are becoming popular in the off-road market.  The GatorJaw is winner of Best New Product Award at SEMA 2015.The GatorJaw shackle features a knot on one end with a slip loop on the other end.  Simple loosening of the slip loop, feed the knot through the loop eye, and cinch it up.  You can easily (and quickly) join two tow straps or attach a tow strap to a winch line end.As noted in the photo, the 7/16” soft shackle feeds through the hole on the Factor 55 winch line end eliminating the need for a steel shackle. As it is a synthetic rope product, you should not attach it to sharp edges.  The fibers are stronger than steep but they are susceptible to wear and cutting.  When dirty, they can be washed and air-dried.  As with ALL towing equipment and accessories, inspect frequently for excess wear, cuts, worn or frayed areas.  Simple and easy to use, no rust, not fuss, and easy to care for….Check out the GatorJaw and other products at http://www.bubbarope.com/

Safety Whip Mounting on a Jeep

Whip Mount in positionThe flags are typically a 5 foot fiberglass pole with a red flag attached to the top and either 1/4” or 5/16” diameter.  While there are a number of different methods to mount the flag on an ATV, dune buggy, or side-by-side, mounting on a full-size 4x4 requires a little planning.

My recent visit to the Sand Sports Super Show provided an interesting, easy to mount quick-release system designed to simplify the process for mounting and dismounting whips with no tools and no trimming of shattered ends necessary.

Other grab handles are offered in any color you want as long as it is black.  And, other grab handles have a hard rubber handle.  The Surprise Straps Grab Handles are made using only 100% Nylon, American made #550 Paracord from the same Manufacturers that supply the US Military.  And, they provide a variety of color combinations to suit individual tastes or match vehicle color.  As my Jeep is red with black interior, I opted for the red Paracord over black nylon straps.

Brake Booster Replacement

Brake problems can manifest themselves in a number of ways. Shoes or pads can wear out, leaks can develop in the master or slave cylinders, or the power booster on a power brake system could fail. In this case, the problem was the brake booster leaking vacuum on a 1994 Land Cruiser FZJ80.
