IIHS Top Safety Pick Announced

11 vehicles earn Top Safety Pick award

ARLINGTON, VA (Sept 25, 2008) — Four small cars, two midsize cars, two midsize SUVs, one large luxury car, one small pickup, and a midsize convertible are the latest winners of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick award. Winners afford superior overall crash protection among the vehicles in their classes. To qualify, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of good in the Institute's front, side, and rear tests. It also must be equipped with electronic stability control.

"Criteria to win are tough because Top Safety Pick is intended to drive continued improvements such as good crash test ratings and rapid addition of electronic stability control, which is standard equipment on 9 of the 11 new winners," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "Recognizing vehicles at the head of the class for safety helps consumers distinguish the best overall choices without having to sort through multiple test results."

Safety alert issued over headlamps due to burn hazard

Friday, September 19, 2008

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a safety alert Thursday for a brand of headlamps because of a burn hazard.

If the headlamp is used with rechargeable batteries, the cable connecting the battery pack to the lamp can spark, melt or catch fire.

There have been 13 reports in the United States of sparking and melting, with two reports of flames. One consumer received a minor burn to the hand and another experienced singed hair.

About 322,000 of the headlamps were sold across the U.S. at specialty retailers from February 2003 through August 2008 for between $40 and $80 US each.
