New study identifies biomass harvesting techniques that have few long-term impacts

MOSCOW, Idaho, October 6, 2016 - A set of newly published studies evaluated nearly forty years of data on the impacts of biomass utilization on soil, tree, and plant recovery and found minimal impact using certain forest harvesting techniques.

USFWS Releases National Survey of Economic Activity

Hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities contributed more than $144.7 billion in economic activity across the United States according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (Service) National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, published every five years.

The final report of the 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation has detailed information on the number of U.S. residents 16 years of age and older who fished, hunted or wildlife watched (fed, observed, or photographed wildlife) in 2011. It also provides information on their expenditures for trips, equipment, and other items. Individual state reports will be available on a flow basis beginning in January 2013.

Navy Applies to BLM to Expand Fallon Range Training Complex

BLM Segregates 600,000 Acres While Navy Studies Extension, Expansion

RENO, Nevada – The U.S. Navy has applied to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to continue to use the site of the Fallon Range Training Complex and to expand it to include more than 600,000 acres of additional public land. As a result of the Navy’s withdrawal application, the BLM has segregated the proposed expansion area from appropriation under the public land laws. The two- year segregation is obligatory while the Navy prepares an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on its expansion and extension proposals for the Fallon site about 65 miles east of Reno.

Wildfire, recreational safety: Everyone’s responsibility this holiday weekend

Kaibab National Forest officials are expecting increased numbers of visitors at the forest’s more popular recreational areas over the Fourth of July weekend. Visitors are encouraged to use caution during all recreational activities that could potentially cause personal injury or a wildfire. The following are tips for having a safe and pleasant visit to the Kaibab National Forest: 

Campfires, Smoking and Fireworks: Forest visitors are reminded that although some areas of the forest have received some isolated moisture, the forest remains in very high fire danger and campfire and smoking restrictions are in effect in order to protect public health and reduce preventable human-caused fires.
