SDORC News for October 2016

I have some good news to share this month with all of you. First, SDORC has hired a lobbyist to help with the reauthorization of the OHV program. Kathy Lynch will be guiding us at each step in the legislative process. She has many years of experience lobbying and is familiar with our challenge. People in the capitol are already holding meetings and it will put us ahead to have an advocate involved. Once again I thank Polairis for their generous grant to make this possible.

Geocaching: A New Way to Explore the Great Outdoors

No matter your age or fitness, geocaching is great way to experience nature. Now, what exactly is geocaching? Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure-hunting activity using GPS-enabled devices, like your smartphone or other smart device. Like a pirate seeking treasure, you will navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates in an attempt to find a geocache — a container that comes in various shapes and sizes — hidden at a given location. There are more than 2 million official geocaches hidden around the globe.

Fire Below!

Skid plate - Aftermath of the skid plate fire that nearly destroyed a Jeep Unlimited.

Jim and his buddy Tim were doing a pre-run on permitted but seldom-used trails in the vicinity of Tonopah, Nev. back in August. They stopped to check the map and both noticed the smell of burning grass. They did a 360 inspection and found nothing. Wildfires blazed in the Sierras, but were too far away to be the source for this odor. They resumed their drive.
