The American Battlefield Trust recommends these events and activities at some of America's most famous historic sites

This July, Americans will celebrate the 242nd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Drafted by Thomas Jefferson, the document was adopted by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, formally declaring that America’s 13 colonies viewed themselves as free and independent states.  In honor of Independence Day, the American Battlefield Trust — a national nonprofit organization that preserves battlefields of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War — recommends these eight family-friendly Fourth of July events at historic destinations nationwide:

Try a Star Tour for a change of scenery

A recent astronomical event caused major excitement throughout the North American continent as a rare total eclipse of the moon was visible.  Those lucky enough to be within the direct of the path were treated to an unforgettable sight. For those not in the direct path, the next best thing was a trip to a local observatory to gaze upon the heavens in wonder.

Okay, being in a southern California location was not the optimal point to view the eclipse. However, there is a well-known bed and breakfast in Julian that caters to amateur astronomers and provides a means to view heavenly bodies. And, it was time for me to re-acquaint myself with the spectacular stars.

Officials Remind Public of Flash Flood Hazards, Information Resources

Payson, Ariz., July 21, 2017 — The recent tragic flash flood event north of Payson serves as a reminder that flash floods can occur in any drainage, creek and river throughout the state during heavy rains and monsoon storms.

Floods are among nature’s most common and destructive natural hazards. The public should be aware that even when storms do not appear to be in the immediate area, rain from a storm miles upstream can drain quickly and create flash floods miles downstream.

According to the National Weather Service’s U.S. Natural Hazard Statistics, flash floods are the number one cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S. These flash floods are extremely dangerous and swift, carrying debris, trees, rocks, large boulders, and mud that can sweep away anything or anyone in its path along stream, creek and river channels.

Outdoor recreation on Public lands

The Bureau of Land Management has launched a web-based tool to improve the public's access to thousands of recreation sites across BLM-managed public lands.  These sites offer visitors unique opportunities and memorable experiences as vast as the land itself.

BLM provides a basic summary of the recreation site, contact information for the agency field office, fee information where applicable, necessary permits and passes, and maps.

Users can search by location, keyword or activity — everything from auto touring to winter sports.
