QuartzOn the recent Desert Advisory Council tour of the new Mojave Trails National Monument in the southern California desert, there was a stop that featured rockhounding. Southern California rockhounds were at a "collection" site and explained what they do and what they look for in the rocks.  Advice from a seasoned rockhounder was to always watch the ground.  At the next stop on the tour, I happened to be looking down and spotted this quartz sample partially buried.  The piece measures about 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches.  Cleaned up it makes a nice show piece....

The deserts are magnificent places to visit.  The local rockhound enthusiasts worked to ensure the collections of gems and minerals was permitted in the new monument.

Watch where you step.  You may find your own gem....
