LANSING (Sept 12, 2013) — A bill that would allow off-road vehicles to drive on some city streets and the shoulders of some roads in all 83 counties is on its way to Gov. Rick Snyder after the state House voted overwhelmingly Thursday to approve the legislation.

Currently, only eight counties in northern Lower Michigan and the entire Upper Peninsula can enact ordinances allowing off-road vehicles to travel on the shoulders of certain maintained roads. The two new bills, which passed on votes of 103-5 and 101-7, would allow municipalities in all counties in the state to enact ordinances to open up some streets and road shoulders to off-road vehicles. Those local units of government could also make sure ORVs could be prohibited from some streets and highways.
