MUCH Stronger. Variant of the 154 which you'll see in high-HP Supras. I'd personally just bite the bullet and do the 4-cyl tcase adapter - keeps you from having to mess with driveshafts twice, which should make it a wash. [/quote]

Did pick up some Downey swap mounts and some 4.3 swap headers (came out of a rolled runner with a 4.3) on the cheap though. Not sure if I'll use either one but figured I can resell and make $$ if I don't...


The mounts may work well. Play with them upside right and upside down for placement (assuming they are the poly bushing type). The largest issue I had with headers was the steering shaft. Couple of taps w/ a hammer provided necessary clearance when I did the 3.8 Buick... Decided to use Astro van tubular manifolds, modified with longer collector, when I did the 4.3. Either works well.

That's the plan, I've beat the snot out of the r154 in my Supra and it's held u great at 600+hp...

I'm commited now, picked up a v6 trans to 4cyl case adapter for $80 off w/free shipping from AA during their Black Friday sale smile Also found an r150 for $400 on craigslist earlier this week, think that's a fair price?

considering I've had a complete R150/tcase combo on CL for $175 w/ no takers... I'd say it's a bit high.. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" />

Damn, I'll keep lookin. Yota parts are hard to come by down here, most get exported across the border unfortunately. My buddy has been looking for an extra cab 2nd or 3rd gen truck for like a year and hasn't found anything that isn't way overpriced, everything else goes south...

Another swap question, did you use a 153t or 168t flywheel when you did the manual trans? Looks like the 153t bellhousing allows more room for exhaust routing but I can't find any externally balanced 4.3s that came with a 153t. I read a 305 flywheel may work but also don't want to risk doing damage if the balancing is off.

I believe it was the 153 tooth. It was a Downey unit, IIRC, with the bellhousing, clutch fork and hybrid centerforce clutch.

Yea, that's what the swap kits come with but I'm not sure they're balanced correctly for the newer vortec motors. The AA literature claims use can use either in their bellhousing as long as you use a high torque starter (which I have from another project) with the 168 so it might not be an issue. Plus a parts store 168 tooth for my motor is only $100 vs. $300 for AAs, I'm going to call them and make sure though...

The bellhousing is a dual pattern - works on the 60 degree 3.8 Buick as well.

Pretty sure I used a factory flywheel... Been over 10 years since I did the swap. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

Exchanged email with Jim at Jim's Performance about harness mods, was going to do it myself (even bought some factory manuals on ebay) but for the price it's not worth it. Put my 22re/w56 up for sale today, if I can find a buyer the swap will kick into high gear...

You planning to run a speed sensor delete? I did things the expensive/easy way and purchased a Howell harness and speed sensor delete chip. Nice harness and 5 wire hook-up, IIRC. But not cheap.

I'm planning on keeping the speed sensor so I can retain egr, Jags That Run sells a slick little adapter that plugs into the tcase and allows connnections for the vss and Yota speedo cable. Was going to take the hard but cheap route on the harness but it's not worth it when I can have it modified for 5 wire hookup relatively cheap...
