The 3.8 motor in the 03 and up is actual "Mitsubishi" not Dodge like the former year models.
Whoa! How ya figure??? Yea never seen any year Montero that came with with a Dodge engine...Dont know where that came from The only Mitsubishi that has a Dodge engine is the Raider. Mitsubishi Raider that is. Mitsubishi Raider Woah woah... I beg your pardons, oh thou who art more informed. I must have understood this wrong. Or more likely confusing all the Isuzu Troopers I have owned, some of them had GM engines?? So do all Montero models 1985-2003 4 cyl, 3.0 and 3.5 have "Mitsubishi" Engines? I knew Mitsu and Dodge shared alot of the same stuff but I guess I don't understand exactly how and when. I had heard many of the dodge minivans shared some of the same engines as the Montero, and most dodge mini vans of the same era seem to be a big piece a shiz. Figured since Gen II's almost always have major engine issues as well that must be because its dodge, ha. That's what I get for making assumptions. Do clarify if you can, I'm curious.

I guess I'll beat the dead horse. Chrysler purchased the long block 6G72 3.0 V6 from Mitsubishi to put in their Minivans, Lebarrons etc. Yes the 2.6, 3.0, 3.5, and 3.8 Montero engines are pure Mitsubishi. In the Chrysler vehicles, chrysler put their own intake and other bits on the engine, but the long block was essentially the same and purchased from Mitsu, not the other way around.

since Gen II's almost always have major engine issues Should read "since Gen II's that don't receive proper maintenance almost always have major engine issues". Which is really no different than any other vehicle with a timing belt that doesn't get replaced when it's supposed to.

I've had my '02 since '03. It had 23k on it, and I'm up to 112k now. I have only great things to say about my Gen III. We were looking for an around the town, hauling up to seven person rig; however, it needed to have a good 4x4 set up for back country expeditions. The Monty was, and is, the perfect fit for our needs. The off-roading capabilities have never let us down. High speed desert runs are amazing with the front and rear IS. I've driven it in most terrains. The big exception is serious rock crawling. Works great in snow, but I usually end up slapping the chains on when it gets up towards the CV joints (feels like your not hammering the rig as much to me with chains). I would suggest following the service schedule if you do end up purchasing one. Good Luck

Love my Gen 3 as others have echoed on this so far. Been away from this board for a while and come back to find this thread so I guess I should contribute since I was one of first on here with Gen 3. I have used mine for a family hauler to tackling some serious rocks in creeks around TN here. Axles are strong up to 33s but as soon as you hit the 34 mark i found with my LTBs they seem pretty delicate. That being said with mine being locked front and rear it will go anywhere I have the balls to point it and more....I have to limit myself because I really would like to keep the body panels on it and wrinkle free
It hauls the kids and family very comfortably, with no worries. Highly recommend the 3.8L because it has noticable more punch and get up and go(I have driven 3.5)I cant complain really about anything cause it has served me well and continues to do so with 135K on the odometer.
03 Montero XLS, OME 2"suspension lift,Full skid plates, Extended Diff/transfer breathers. 34 LTB's, Winch w/syn rope, Locked front/rear.

I just wish Mitsubishi still offered the current Montero (Pajero) in the U.S. I'd go buy one today.

I've not heard this before.
John B. John, Kind of a tongue in cheek comment but all one has to do is search on Craigslist or Ebay to figure this one out. Like someone said, probably because of lack of maintenance.
