Front Drive Shaft Noise - Question #1031578 07/12/11 02:53 AM

Finally got the beast up and running and road legal. First drive in 4WD I noticed a noise. The front drive shaft has a "clanging" noise coming from it. Even though all the ujoints seem tight, I pulled the shaft tonight and noticed between the two U joints that are next to the transfercase there seems to be a small curved metal plate inbetween the two joints, is this normal? I'm pretty sure this is where the clanging noise is coming from. Now I'm tring to determine if it's broke, or if I should take it out or not even worry about it and listen to the jingle bells. I'll try to get some pics posted but it's at a really awkward location.
Oh, the truck is a 1980 if that helps.

That sounds like a screwed up rock guard; it's there to cover up that cardan joint. You should see 2-3 bolts that hold it and some bracketing.

You can pull it off and see about straightening it out. To find another cardan joint or front driveshaft is becoming more difficult for these older trucks.

If the metal piece is inside the CV joint housing, see below for some ideas:

Might be the CV joint needs to be rebuilt.

You guys are right, and the link you provided was exactly what I was searching for. I dropped it off at a drive shaft shop this morning, still waiting for a verdict.

By the looks of it the rock guard was cracked/broken and the needle bearings are no longer in the joint.

Thank you for the quick help/info. I attempted to seperate the joint last night but my vise couldn't handle the abuse.

Well the verdict is in. They said it's shot all the way around. Splines are worn and CV is busted. I'm debating ebay and junk yards, but either way it's going to be 30+ years old. Anyone know where I can find a new one for a stock lifted 1980 4x4 on 31" tires? He quoted me 1400 for a custom, told him I'd have to sleep on it.

Thanks in advance.

$1400 for a driveshaft? Something there is off. I'm assuming that includes a lot of labor etc.
Does it need to be a custom length? With only 31" tires I'd think the OE would work just fine, unless the lift is a lot.

there are tons of places to get drivshafts from...

Wait, is this one of the old trucks that were 4x2 from factory and converted in the US?

It is an 80 so Toyota made it, they started making 4 X 4s in 79.

Go to a wercking yard and get a front D-shaft off a IFS rig, clearence the CV and have it retubed the correct length.

The front cardans have always been extremely expensive over the past few years. Oops offers a viable solution.

FWIW, for me to get a rear D/L balanced to include new ujoints here is about $700. That's if I've redone the ujoints myself.

Update:

I went to o'reilly auto parts and bought a MasterPro remanufactured one for $350 including the $50 core charge. I figure hell it comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. I thought about going to the salvage yard and even ebay, but figured those are still 30 years old and would probably need rebuilding anyways.

Thanks for all the info, hopefully all goes well and the truck is all good to go. I already started to look for trails in my area.
