Rear Axle ABS/No ABS? #1042235 02/17/12 06:28 AM

If anyone of you recall from previous posts I have had trouble with the rear of my T100 for a long time. Finally was able to scrape the cash together to buy a used axle.

Found a few local ones, but some state no abs? I thought the rears all had abs on the T's??

This site seems to verify my notion: http://www.toyoland.com/trucks/t100.html

My '97 has no ABS whatsoever. I take that back, I have poor man's ABS (the warped drums/rotors). <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

My 1998 SR5 2WD auto doesn't have any factory ABS. Don't miss it at all. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

My '93 has rear ABS and last year I had to replace the differential. I had to find one with rear ABS and what I found was there is a sensor mounted on the differential. Must be some type of "hall sensor" (or hall effect sensor is what I think it is called, we have some of those at work that detect motion) and it detects the teeth on the ring gear. If your rear differential has this sensor, the axle housing shouldn't matter. this is attached to the rear differential or hogs head or technically speaking some people call it pumpkin (made like a Ford rear differential). If it is just the drivers side axle shaft or passenger's side axle shaft, I think they were identical and shouldn't matter if it has ABS or not. The housing for the rear differential shouldn't matter either. HTH

After some research I did find that there is an abs ring that goes onto the axle shaft. Could possibly pulls the shafts and
put them on if the actual sensors on the axle.Honestly if I just had front abs I dont care.

Im going to be calling every junkyard around me. Sadly car-part.com was wrong when i checked it, junker near me had one with abs for 350 bucks..according to them it doesnt exist at there yard <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

There should be some ID number; the stock# column is usually what's marked on the car as it sits in the junkyard. Give them that info if it's there. Won't get off their butts and look otherwise.

Body Damage is Cool
As far as I understand, the T100 rear ABS is linked to those sensor rings, so you *should* be able to plug your old shafts into a new housing and maintain it. I don't know why car-part lists the housings as with or without. I'm guessing it's just sort of a cataloging hiccup by people who know their way around vehicles but not necessarily in a model-specific way. They know some came with and some came without, but don't know the way it operates so list anything to do with the rear end as ABS or not.

FWIW, the early rear ABS sucked and did not function reliably enough for me to keep it. I'm much happier with a human ABS, ie pumping the brakes.
