A couple days ago my wife was driving the kia and parked at the store and went to restart after done shopping and starter didnt turn, had power relays were kicking and still nothing so i dug into taking off the starter, and holly crap there is alot to remove to get it off. mine was ok since i have 4inch body lift so did most from passenger wheel well, feel sorry for the guys with no body and suspension lift trying to get this thing off. Got the old off new one on and still no go needles to say i was so took my handy screw driver and jumped the starter drove it home put the old one back on got my money back on the new and decided that i was done with the four banger parking the kia and starting the tear down for my axle swap and engine and drive train change. After im done the only thing kia will be the body

I've had a similar problem with my Sporty, which I'm still working on sorting out. The problem I have is that I'll turn the key to start and nothing happens - not even the sound of the solenoid engaging. After replacing the starter, all seemed well. And then the same thing happened again. I pulled the new starter, assuming it was bad, only to find that it was in good working order. And the Sporty started right up after re-installing the starter. So I suspect the problem is either in the wiring to the solenoid or the ignition switch. I'm finishing up a dual battery mod and will see how it performs after that's done. If the problem persists, I might install a starter switch to bypass the ignition if I can't find the problem outright. I've read other posts discussing similar problems, but no absolute-answer on what is the common cause. If you figure it out, let us know...

sounds like it pretty much could be corrosion on terminals somewhere.. i hate the stock terminals on the battery.. it's so strange..
So, i bought an 01 Kia Sportage. before i even drove it, i nick-named it The Goat.. it has been just like a goat.. stubbern at every corner...

TUrn the headlights ON : are the headlights dimming dead when you try to start? This would indicate battery pole corrosion. If headlights stay ON, the problem is elsewhere.

Howdy everybody!
I'm new to the forum (just registered), but have been reading it for a while. I had some similar problems with my car, so think I can be helpful in this thread. The main message is, check your wiring going to PCM. Lift the carpet on the passenger side and see if all the connections are firm, and clean without rust. Keep reading for full explanation.
A few weeks after I bought my Sporty, sometimes it wouldn't start. I'd turn the key and nothing would happen. The lights in the dash would come on, the battery was good, the starter was fine (was new), but the engine wouldn't even turn. A few hours later it would start, like nothing ever happened. It did this for a couples weeks, until it completely stopped. I still had the same symptoms, lights on the dash were on, engine wouldn't turn. Sometimes I could hear a click inside the car, from under the glove box. Well, I lifted the carpet on the passenger side, and found a complete mess with the wiring going to the PCM. A bunch of corroded connectors, corroded wires, electrical tape, all you can imagine. Among all the wires, I found a connector that wasn't sited properly. That damn thing was preventing the starter from turning. This connector had a thicker wire, maybe that goes to the starter?
I called the previous owner and she said that the heater core was leaking for some time on the wiring, and it got all corroded. She paid someone to fix it, but the person did a [censored] of a job. I had to redo all the wire connections, and the problem went away. It took some time and gave me some pain in the back (it's a kind of hard to reach spot), but it fixed the problem.
