I'm sure others of you have tossed around the idea of converting to disc brakes in the rear, and lately I have been wondering if we could somehow use the 1st gen Sorento rear brake hardware for this purpose. I believe that the wheel bolt pattern is the same on both vehicles, so that would be helpful.

Any thoughts?

Honda S2000 brakes. Different bolt pattern, same axle

Interesting thought, but the S2000 has independent suspension in the rear, so that means CV joints and halfshafts instead of solid axles. A different bolt pattern means you're running different wheels in the front and rear and now need to keep two spares with you.

The rotor can be drilled to fit our bolt patern. 1989-1997 T-Bird/Cougar owners have done this so they can switch from 5x4.25 to 5x4.5 bolt pattern.

IF you had a scrap sporty lieing around, I believe it would be a matter of just re-using the backing plate, caliper hanger and rotor off the front.

Any reason it wouldnt work?

Not a bad thought, but the problem is no e-brake and what are you going to attach the wheel to?

Remember, the sportage rear drum has the wheel studs in it and the rear drum bolts to the axle.

I believe the Sorento rear disc brake setup has the e-brake built into it. I figured you could fab a bracket up that mounts to the axle housing end for the caliper, using the same four bolts that hold the axle retaining plate, which I believe is also how the Sorento is set up. And finally, I envisioned cutting or grinding down the drum to just make a surface for mounting the wheel instead of a full brake drum, or just fabbing a new piece for the same purpose that woudl hold the wheel studs.

Here are pics of part of the hardware I'll be putting on a 1998+Sportage rearend.

I have brackets,longer studs, and discs (will add pictures later but I need to unpack them).

Will probably buy the Korean Locker for the rear.

Note the longer studs installed. This is due to the new wheels my wife got me for Christmas last year are thicker than the stock wheels.

Anyone with any thoughts, suggestions, or ideas, please keep them coming. I hope that we can build this topic to a mod that guys can do.

Calipers are off an 81 Eldorado.

Okay.. those wheel mounting plates are pretty much what I envisioned and mentioned in the post just before yours. I still think the Sorento calipers would work, using a bracket that bolts to the end tube as noted in my post above.

I guess great minds think alike.
Is the Sorrento wheel bolt pattern the same as the Sportage?

I went with the Caddy because there are several conversions out there and I got them really cheap on a closeout.

Bought the material for the bracket and will be drawing it up in the next couple of weeks.
