After setting up dual batteries and a home-fabbed cargo rack on my swing-away tire carrier on the Smittybilt rear bumper (all steel), my Sporty feels a bit heavy in the rear and the ride is a bit soft. I'm running the 105AA springs for the rear lift, which I've found to have a spring rate of approximately 160 LBS/in. I don't like the soft ride. It feels like the rear end is swaying with a bit of outward pitch when turning. So I'm trying to figure out the best way to stiffen it back up. I've researched the topic and found that either stiffer springs or stiffer shocks are the recommended fix. But which method seems to be a subject for debate. And none of the discussions are Sportage-specific. So which method do you think will do the job???

For springs, I could try 106AAs, which are stiffer. Or I could try an aftermarket spring set for the Jeep TJ/LJ. But they all provide lift, the minimum being 2 inches. I don't know how that will alter the lift on my Sporty. I don't want to take it much higher, though the extra weight from mods has dropped it about 1/2 inch already.

As for shocks, I think Dennis Thompson mentioned shocks for the front end of the Jeep TJ with 6 inch lift work great on the rear of the Sporty (he recommended monotubes). So perhaps a stiff-riding shock for the TJ might work?

well, to be honest, what exactly are you trying to cure? if it's "stiffness", than springs. if you feel like the ride needs to be controlled better, it's shocks. more than likely, you need new springs.. but upgrading springs, you may as well get new shocks as well to control the bounce better and slow down the oscilations.


So, i bought an 01 Kia Sportage. before i even drove it, i nick-named it The Goat.. it has been just like a goat.. stubbern at every corner...

Springs. Go with the 106 because it's stiffer and will keep things from sagging. Shocks will just control the bounce.

You could go with Procomp MX6 shocks so you could adjust the amount of control from soft to hard.

I picked up a set of Pro Comp shocks (monotube) and will install them tomorrow. They aren't adjustable. But they are nitrogen-charged and will be stiffer than the Rav-4 shocks that are on my Sporty right now (I think they are Rav-4-types). I was originally going to buy some adjustable shocks spec'd for the the Jeep TJ front (6" lift). But after opening the box just before paying, I found out they had loop-style mounts on both ends, where the Sporty's rear shocks have a stem-type mount on the top end. So the parts-guy looked up a set that had the proper mounts and a 26" length (the Rav-4 shocks measured 25" with the rear axle hanging). I will need to install some keepers to hold the springs in place because the 105AAs are only 23-24" tall, uncompressed. I'm pretty sure they can kick out of the mounts if one of the rear wheels ever hangs - even with the Rav-4 shocks installed. Anyhoo, I'm going to give the shocks a go to see if that tightens up the ride. If not, I'll work on finding a compatible set of coils to handle the extra mass in my <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

The shocks are installed and have improved the ride significantly. The rear still feels a bit heavy, but doesn't sway out like it did with the Rav-4 shocks. It definitely feels better. However, I think they are about 1" shorter than the old shocks, where I was told they'd be 1" longer. That's OK with me though, as the coil springs still come loose from the body at full extension. I'm fine with loosing the inch for a better ride.

The shocks are Pro Comp ES9000 series - #924515. They are spec'd to fit the following vehicles (front shocks, I think):

1984-2010 Ford F-250, 1984-2010 Ford F-350, 1984-2010 Jeep Cherokee, 1984-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 1984-2010 Jeep Wrangler

This is a twin-tube shock. But it is designed with a bump stop that is supposed to prevent damage caused by over extension. I told the parts guy that ordered them that I wanted monotubes. Guess that point was lost in translation... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> Anyway, they are beefy. The body is larger in diameter than the shocks they replaced. In fact, they are so big that the shock body actually barely touches the lower shock mount on the left side, but has about 1 mm of daylight between shock and mount on the right. I don't like the tight fit. But it isn't crushing or rubbing. So it will work. I did have to transfer the metal bushing insert from the old shock to the new. That was a tedious task, as I had to press out the insert from the old shock, press out the bushing from the new shock, lube up both with hand soap, press the insert in the new bushing, then lube up the shock and bushing to press it back in. The metal insert was larger than the hole in the new bushing and wouldn't press in while the bushing was still on the shock. And then I had to trim about 2-3 mm of excess off the sides of the bushings to get them to slide into the shock mounts. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" /> Ah, but it all worked out in the end. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

Well, being a Jeep person myself; I first and foremost don't know why you all do that to your rigs in the first place. As I understand it, the korean kit is always a problem. How come nobody ever looks at the understanding of real suspension lifts. If you take the time, you will find resources out there. Check out the Jeep TJ spring 105 and it might meet the need of that POS!

Um, right. Whatever. I think the Sporty-crowd walks that path because it is different from the everyone-does-it crowd of Jeep, Yota and Zuki. If it ain't your thing, fine. But these POS's will hold their own with beefed-up Jeeps and the like. Sure, everyone laughs at a Kia on dirt. But when they make it through the trail, jaws hang.

You will notice after a few wheelin trips you shock will get dented up where they are close to the axle, it won't effect the way they work, I always said to get mono tube shocks but some how always ended up with twin tubes. I have kicked out a rear spring twice in Moab, put it back in and kept on wheelin. Your Kia is lookin good, Keep up the good work.
