I have a 1998 Gen 2.5, but it should work on all the 3.5L Montero's.

I got a Volvo 945 wagon electric fan from Pick n Pull for $38. The nice thing about pulling this fan is it's held in place with three screws located at the top of the fan. They are the torx type screws, so be prepared.

It's a two speed fan, that is it has three wire coming off it. Red is high speed and green is the low speed. Black is the ground. I use my Delta Current Control (DCC) model FK-35 35A Fan Control Kit to wire it up.

Here's some pictures

Installed in the truck, looking from top side. Tight fit,but it's below the pulley by 1/2" or so.

Works like a dream.

I forgot to mention, you need to cut the top lip off the fan shroud.

How did you guesstimate the Volvo fan would provide enough CFM to cool under all work loads?

Well I check the after market for fans, such as Flex-a-lite. They have a "How to choose a electric fan" section. Based on that information I pick the Volvo fan mostly because it fit.

Nothing scientific at all.

I change because our stock fan RPM's are determine by the engine's RPM's and at crawling speed that's very slow. With the electric fan the controller controls the fan speed by sensing the radiator heat.

Your Volvo fan is a bit different than mine, glad it worked out for you.

These fans pull a serious amount of air (3000+cfm), you will feel the heat escaping all around the truck. They also draw a lot of amps, be sure to use 100% duty cycle and heavy gauge wire or you will be sorry (i was). 35-40amp start and 25 amp continuous draw, This was the first summer with mine and i must say the truck has never had a more consistent temp. I'm talking 117 degrees outside while running A/C in stop and go traffic, I did however melt the wires going to the fan one day but that was my fault for cheaping out on wires i have since fixed that problem.

Before i ran a Volvo fan in my '99 i ran one in my old '94 and i used a regular old ford solenoid, yeah that lasted a month.

*I highly recommend using the constant duty relay/solenoid to anyone considering going with a volvo fan.

That seems awfully high?? Assume you measured it? What size engine in the Volvo?

Toasty, are you using that fan instead of the engine driven fan? I know the mud and water thing you aren't familiar with, but I am sure you can get. Being able to shut the fan off during water crossings and mudding would be great. I just want to verify you're using only it.

Here's a youtube video of a Ford fan. It's similar to the Volvo fan.

The Volvo was a V6.

I don't think you guys realize how much air these things pull, not only do they flow across the radiator it displaces air from the engine bay, trans tunnel and undercarriage. When it kicks on you can go to any side of my truck and feel the hot air pouring out from underneath, if i park in dirt and it kicks on it's like a little Montero helicopter is landing.

And i don't have an over ride to turn it off, it doesn't run all the time so if i need to cross water i can either time it or get out and disconnect. I don't want a switch to turn it off, to easy to forget or mess up. I can always tarp the front if i was really worried about it.
