I tried a clutch dump at 6,000rpm 0mph.. aka a crazy @#$ burnout. Well, this time it broke something. Pretty sure it was the Ring&Pinion gear. I put it in 4wd hoping I could limp it home but it was no use. So I towed it to my shop. I may still have good spider gears. I will pull apart the rear end tomorrow. But even if the spiders are good.. I want LSD, LOCKER, something other than open and I want it cheap and now! lol. I'm not a huge four by four buff regarding knowing what fits what on these. I know there's a 26 spline and a 28 spline depending on years. Mine's a 4dr 2001 base model. As I said, I'll inspect the broken stuff tomorrow at the shop and take out the diff so I can run in Front wheel drive till I can afford the rear diff. Anyone selling a good compatible lsd/auto locker/air locker rear diff? plus i need the ring/pinion set. :P
Hopefully I didn't damage the rear axle too much otherwise I gotta go to the local junk yard. Thanks guys!

If you want a locker, the most affordable will be the Lock Right-style branded as Track Finder. They have 26 spline for the front and 28 spline for the rear. They don't make the 26 spline rear anymore. Your rear axle is 28 spline ('98-end of 1st gen). And the front axles are all 26 spline (no changes made by Kia on the front). You can get one through a seller in South Korea. He's reliable and his service fees are reasonable. The current price is about $445 for the locker alone. I have one I'm working on installing that came installed in a carrier. It cost about $750 shipped (off the top of my head - take that with a grain of salt), with new carrier bearings installed. It sounds like a lot more. But when you factor in the installation and gathering of parts (side thrust washers, bearings, etc), the cost of the assembled part isn't so bad.

If you want to go with the 5.38 R&P set (need both front and rear), they'll cost about $216/set (current exchange rate) plus service fee and shipping. If you go with express mail service, plan to add over $100. But you will have the parts in your hand in within a week.

That noted, I have a small collection of USED rear diffs/28 spline (3rd members... aka "pumpkins"). If you are in a pinch for an open diff, 4.77 R&P set or a complete pumpkin, let me know. I might be able to help you out. I don't have any spare lockers for the rear... You'll have to pry my TF locker from my cold, dead fingers...

Well, I think this case is closed. I found a rear axle at the local parts yard in Spokane, WA. We do business with them on a regular basis at our shop. They pull the parts, they even have a daily shuttle to deliver parts to shops in our town since our town is close to Spokane. They only deliver to shops though. So, the convenience in it all said and done is that I have some dude stop it off right at the bay at the shop I work at on the day I order it. Downside, $250. :P'
It's an open diff. Oh well, I'll install this one and work on finding more what I want later when I can afford it I guess. At least I'll be back to mobile all within 48 hours.

Well I put the new axle in tuesday night. I thought the local used parts dealer would've wanted the old axle for a core. They usually do. If anything for the value of scrap metal. Well this time they didn't so I took apart my old diff and found that I had broken a carrier bearing cap and upon further digging had also found that I had broke the carrier too. Can we say dang? After I heal from this financial setback I would like to buy an lsd of some sort. ..now that I understand how to disassemble the diff.[Linked Image]
