Today is the anniversary of the start of the Afghan War. The first casualty, Johnny Michael Spann, was from my maternal grandparents home town. My uncle lives in his childhood home, and golfs with his father.

Never forgive, and never forget...

Friend of mine went to A'stan after 2 tours in Iraq. Told him it would make Iraq look like a cakewalk. Had his boot up his company's backside; guys hated him; appreciated it once they got there. He was one gung-ho non-comm. Lived for it.

He passed on Veteran's Day last year. Broke his neck when his helmet hung up while going down the rabbit hole of a Stryker. 16 months from retiring. He is laid down in Arlington.

I'm still mad as hell about it; but I think it might've been a blessing in disguise- he was starting to feel the effects of being there too long when we chatted on his mid-tour. Great outdoorsman; good guy.

Rum balls and canned ham in November. Bring it. Used to send him all kinds of contraband of the good kind- hah. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for dinner. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.
