I have searched and may have missed a post about this and I know bits and pieces can be found in other threads but I'm looking at having a thread specific to gen 1 diesel swaps . I'm interested in getting info on what engine works best ( as far as fit and ease of swap) along with what transmission works with engine. I would love to hear from some guys who have done the swaps, there are few threads where guys who done them and commented but never talked more about how it turned out. Any info would be much appreciated.

Get a 4d55/6 out of a pickup or montero and it practically swapps itself. If you have a 4 door you probably want a later model motor and i'd recommend a 4M40 instead.

Well for the 4 cylinder trucks the diesel is the easiest motor swap you can do, everything just goes in. For your truck though you're going to be slightly more involved, you're going to need a transmission and if you don't have the means to relocate the motor mounts on the frame you're going to need a 4 cylinder diesel that is configured for a V6 frame (4M40).

Moving your motor mounts isn't that big of a job though.

There is nothing practical about dropping $3k to $3.5k into a 25YO truck.

Check the Mitsu Diesel forum here.

Interesting to hear that it's easy. I did a diesel to gas swap on a Chevy truck one time. I had to replace the entire fuel system, trans, drive shaft, engine wiring harness, instrument panel, and ECU. I thought I'd never get that thing out of the garage!

The kids called my wife's Montero the "Momtero". So, they called mine the "Dadtero".

Agreed, it's an easy swap but not practical or economical. In fact not swapping to diesel will buy you a ton of gasoline AND the diesel efficiency will NEVER pay for the motor/maintenance EVER. We do it because diesel rocks and performs better offroad. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
