UPDATE:

I had the codes pulled today, and here's what I got:

- eng codes po174 (lean bank 2) po171 (lean bank 1)
- anti lock brakes and brake booster codes 35 & 36 (steering wheel sensor)
- tps code 25 (low battery on tire 2)

And then the garage my invoice says "would need to do more diagnostics". Any thoughts on these codes? I would like to replace the alternator, but with going through this divorce, it might be awhile before I can get that much cash together. Do you guys think there is any risk of doing more damage by running it like it is? TOday I drove it quite a bit, and only the Service Engine Soon light came on, and I noticed it is idling low (under 1k). Seems to run fine otherwise. It does seem that the brakes require more pedal pressure than normal, but maybe that's just a difference between my old '95 and this one. I'm still not at all used to this vehicle

Thanks guys.

I bought this thing near the end of November with 87k miles on it. Clean car fax, immaculate condition. 0 problems with it for the first couple months. The other day I got up early and drove it to a hiking area 30 minutes away. My daughter and I hike for a couple hours and drove home. Then boys and I loaded up the tubes/sleds and hit the big hill about 10 minutes away. We were there over 2 hours. Went to leave, and it would not start. Turned over fine, but no fire. I tried holding pedal to the floor, and pumping the pedal with 15 minutes between attempts. Nothing made it even sputter. So AAA takes it to the shop. Shop dicks around with it for over a week (The same week in which I was served divorce papers while at work). Shop finally takes it into shop, and says, it started right up, nothing wrong. I told them to change the plugs and wires, so they did. 287 bucks. I drove the car home no problems. Next morning, I get in to drive to work, and traction control on and off lights are BOTH light solid, and so is the service engine soon. Low air pressure light is lit as well. Now sometimes none of those lights light up. sometimes just the service engine soon light sometimes both the traction control lights. I'm really, REALLY hoping someone will have some input on this. I'm on the verge of being kicked out of my house (oh but I will be PAYING FOR EVERYTHING). My kids are taking this brutally hard. I can't take not having a dependable vehicle. I'm about ready to put it out for sale. Just over 90k on the ticker, but I can't be putting tons of money into it, as I now have a car payment for the first time in 16 years. Please, Mitsu Masters, give me some clues/advise/wisdom or tell me to piss off. I'll be ready for any and all responses.

Sorry on the troubles ... Shocking on how the 'modern women' will divorce at the drop of a hat...

On the truck ... I would clean and move around all the plugs under the hood .. It a Mitzu so the plugs under the hood and ECU can come loose ...Try moving the plugs and wires as the truck runs and see if it dies....

By plugs, haztoys means the electrical connectors under the hood. Also look at the connections on the ignition switch. You could have a loose connection there causing the starter to engage, but no power to the ECU.

Dang men. No loose plugs. Everything looks ship shape. I disconnected/reconnected everything I could get my hands on. The service Engine Soon light is always on. Sometimes the traction lights are lit, sometimes theyre not. It has started okay so far, but I just have no faith in this thing. It's realy clean. Anyone want an '05 Montero Limited? I'll make ya' a deal. smile

This may be a dumb question, but have you tested the battery and alternator? I am wondering if you are getting low voltage that is causing your issues. My Gen 2 would start fine with a battery that had a dead cell.

Getting the battery tested, and checking the battery cables and grounds would be a good idea. I had a battery short out internally causing all kinds of crazy intermittent things to happen - blinking lights, sunroof opening, horn honking etc.

My battery went from "hmm, wonder if something is up?" to "holy chit what is wrong?", all in less than a week. Truck would stop running pulling away from a light. Other times the radio would shut off and clear all presets. Lights on dash. Took a look and the thing was four years old...

Thanks guys. Everything looks good, and the battery checked out. I had to drive the thing to PA over the weekend for my daughter's bball game. When I left town, the Service Engine Soon light, and both Traction Control Lights were on. About 45 minutes into the drive, the traction control lights went out, and the front diff light started blinking. The rear wheel indicators were out. Same thing happened on the way home. Just driving around town, the Traction control lights come on about 15 minutes into driving, and if I drive long enough, they go out and the diff light blinks. I'm taking it in Thursday to have the antenna replaced (it got broken at work and is being paid for by employer). I'm going to ask the garage to hook it up to the diagnostic machine and see what it says. My question for you guys, is should I try disconnecting the pos terminal and resetting the codes before taking it in? It didn't start doing this until after I had the yahoos at the other place replace the plugs and wires. I thought maybe resetting would clear things up. Thanks men.

If the battery was checked out, wasn't it then disconnected at the same time? You don't want to clear any codes right before taking it in as it needs time to log them.

Autozone hooked up a box to the system and said all was fine. I thought I would clear it, then drive it a few days. I have to make a trip to Columbus on Wed and its going to the shop on Thursday. If you think I shouldn't, I won't clear it. Thanks man.
