I am putting a new setup on my 97 I am replacing CAT and back what pipes do I need? If no one knows I will wing it. I am not sure if I should go SS or MILD steel figure that out after I get some prices on pipes. (2.5in)

Thanks very much.

PO of my Mighty Max used 2.5" SS for the turbo exhaust and a very free-flow cat. The larger pipe doesn't seem to have harmed seat-of-the-pants feel as compared to a 2.25" system an acquaintance had in his Starion.

I think you'll regret the 2.5" exhaust with the 12v 3.0 engine - you'll lose the exhaust velocity and a significant amount of low end torque. Upsizing the exhaust more than 1/4" on any stock motor is a recipe for loss of torque, unless you've got enough engine mods to make it necessary.

Just for reference, the stock exhaust on my 95 SR 3.5 DOHC 24 valve was a 2" - I went with 2-1/4" when I had mine redone. My butt dyno didn't feel any significant increase or decrease in power, but it sounds a lot better than the stock system.

Yes I agree with you about the size of the exhaust. With that said that's why I think I am only going with the 2.5in. I am 50% done with all the stuff to go turbo. I need to finish up one more manifold and then work on fuel control.

Once the turbo is on you will not have to worry about loss of backpressure. The turbo will provide plenty and you will wonder why you didn't go 3".

2.5" is fine though as I can't imagine you will attempt to squeeze every bit of power out of it. I'm very interested in seeing your turbo setup. I've turbo'd a ton of 3.0 24v but never did a 12v.

BTW, the 3.0 24v loves 2.5" exhaust so i'm sure you will be fine between now and turbo time. You'll also be glad the cat is gone.

I am looking for 250HP or so. Should be fairly ez I think to get that ##. I have worked a lot on the 2.6 Turbo stuff. Brother should have his 2.6 going soon in hi 4 door montero. I have had a 2.6 MPI montero in the past as well. Was a lot of fun.

I didn't realize you were going to be going turbo - my post was based on a stock or near-stock engine. If you are going turbo and building a complete exhaust for it, there's no real reason not to go with 3" tubing. You'll lose some off-boost torque, but properly sized turbos should get your boost coming on early enough to make up for it.

KevinC did a custom exhaust on his. Don't remember what size. Search his user name and "downpipe". His work was always outstanding. Miss that guy on here. Anybody talk to him lately? Worried about him...
