Need a Spot
Greetings from Humboldt, CA. I am new to this forum and new to the Montero/Pajero family as well. My name is John, I am a guitar builder/owner at Ronin Guitars here in Northern California. I recently snagged up an 86 Montero SWB which supposedly had a rebuilt motor (paper work and all) as a daily driver/forest exploration vehicle. Two months in, she threw a rod into the oil pan on I5 in the middle of the night. The rest of the vehicle is real nice with most important parts replaced and a nice paint job and new tires.

The next step, swap in a 4d56T w/ intercooler. The tachometer is something that wont work unless I get some foreign parts so I was hoping someone on these forums might know of a good source?

My plan was to look for a brand new 4d56T complete and so far I have only found one place in Canada that said they could get it for $4,500 + shipping.
Is there a good reliable source for this motor in the states?

Any other advice or suggestions for this project would be wonderful.

Welcome! You have a good looking truck there stcengine.com(stcsoshin) carry 4d56's they were selling them thru ebay for some time and have pretty good feedback i bought a diesel thru a company in texas but can't remember the name to be honest. There is a guy here that goes by the name plh that might be able to get you a tach or you can use a dakota digital converter to use your gas tach. 4k is also bit much to pay for a used 4d56.

btw i play bass guitar i currently own a 89 charvel with roto sound steve harris flats and a emg P bass pickups if i were to ever get a bass made it would have to have that charvel neck profile its just perfect.

Thank you for the suggestion on the tach, I will see about trying to reach out to him. These are the two places I have found that claim to have access to the brand new complete 4d56T. Comes with new turbo, flywheel, clutch etc etc 90 percent drop in swap.

http://jdmenginescorp.com has used engines but I have been warned by many people to not pay more than 800 as the chance of it needed a rebuild is pretty high.

Brand New 4d56T from Japanese Diesel Technology in Southern California.
4d56 Brand New from Comox Valley Delica in Canada

I was hoping someone had some experience with one of these places as I have been researching getting a brand new 4d56 for months now and these two places are the only businesses who claim to sell them.

A fellow bass player—sounds like a killer axe. I build custom basses and have been playing bass for a good 10 years. Here is a photo of my bass.

I just contacted this person to get more info, good find thank you!

I do not know if the transmission in the mighty max diesel is stronger than
the tranny in the gas Montero but hopefully so as I think I would blow 5th gear trying to go up a hill with the tranny I have.

nice wheels!

For a new 4D56 you might want to bounce some ideas off Spencer, he uses the same user name on several boards:

Sabbir has them listed at $4078 US dollars. You should be able to talk him down a bit. I think I paid about $250 for shipping and had to pay $50-100 in fees to the importer. All said and done I paid $4200 to have it shipped to the door. I bought the Hyundia/Kia D4BF version of the 4D56. It came with the injection pump, turbo, waterpump, alternator, flywheel and clutch. It did not come with a fan, starter or PS pump.

I am getting a fatal error when going to this link from his website.

http://www.maxoverdrive.ca/parts/home/mi...ml?keyword=4d56

Thank you for all the valuable info, unless the guy in Oregon has a really clean 4d55 (correct year) or it isa 4d56 the new motor looks like the best option.

I can get the differential from the guy in Oregon selling the mighty max engine/transmission/driveline. Do you think that would replace the diff in the montero to lower the ratio and let me cruz at a lower RPM?

Maxoverdrive.ca says it will be a 6-8 week wait and the price has gone up to around $4,400. Considering the torque curve on the D4BF (from Spencer's experience), the gear ratio in this truck would really not work so well for daily driving.

Does anyone know if the 3.55 rear diff from a MM would fit in the Montero from 86? Also, does the Starion front diff fit the Montero?

I found this information and it looks like between the 87 startion lsd and the MM 2wd rear diff they should fit the 86 Montero...???

TYPES OF DIFFERENTIALS
All trucks 79-96 came with what Mitsubishi would call a 8inch differential in the rear

GEAR RATIOS
D50/MMs came with 3 different possible gearing options
3.545 used in certain 2wd trucks let you achieve optimal fuel mileage
3.909 most common gear ratio used in about our trucks most 4x4 came with them for sure
4.222 rarely seen in the D50/MMs only seen so far in 4x4s so far primarily seen in Dodge Raiders/Mitsubishi Monteros
4.625 never came in the trucks only seen in the Monteros/Raiders swaps into our housings

LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIALS & IDENTIFICATIONS OF THEM
LSDs or different gears can be swapped out of various vehicle depending upon wich diff you have if you have the 7.5in diff a rear diff
out of any FOUR CYLINDER MM/D50, Montero/Raider will work

If you have a LSD factory you will have an orange sticker in the door jam and on the differential housing its self talking about the use of LSD additive inside of that housing If you cant find those stickers but still wanting to make sure you do or dont have an LSD you can jack the back of your truck up and spin one wheel then watch the other side to see if it spins in the same direction

Now if you have a 4x4 MM/D50 the rear differential out of a Starion/Conquest will work Starions 1983-1987 (1986/87 widebodies all came LSD, narrowbodies with LSD are more rare) used a 7.5" diff, which will work in the FRONT of a 4cyl truck/rig. Starions 1988-1989 used a 8.0" diff, which will work in the FRONT of a V6 truck/rig. (thanks Robert) If you have a V6 powered truck any first gen Montero/Raider with a V6 will change differentials with your trucks 2nd generation Monteros wont work with the 8in housing available in our trucks I was told the Monteros have a high pinion design compared to the trucks low pinion design

mopar_1986_power_ram50

The Starion LSD from years 83-87 will fit the front diff of the 4cyl MM/D50 trucks/Monteros.
The Starion LSD from years 88-89 will fit the front diff of the 6Cyl MM/D50 trucks/Monteros.

The Montero LSD from 83-89 4Cyl will fit the 4cyl MM/D50 trucks rear diff.
The Montero LSD from 89-91 6Cyl will fit the 6cyl MM/D50 trucks rear diff.

Not all early Starions had LSD, special order and 85.5.
All widebody Starions had LSD.
Not all Montero's had LSD, check for orange sticker inside drivers door jamb.

just to clerify no truck or monty has a 7.5" rear diff.only the front is a 7.5".the rear is a 8".the 4 banger monty and the v6 has a 8" rear for the gen 1.the early years 7.5" starion lsd can be swaped into the front 7.5" diff, with a spacer.
