I run a 91 (92 here) with retro fitted 2.8 TDI...the stock gears like yours have been working out well...I'm not sure under wheeling conditions I would want less.....my big need at the moment is a kickdown cable.....

The 2.8 retro was done for some special police applications along with a few privately owned vehicles and the cable is not available here...if anyone runs across one let me know....

Need a Spot
I would be curious to know if anyone out there has to say about highway speeds and rpm's using the 4d56T and a 4.66 diff ratio. I have located front and rear 3.9's out of a 4x4 MM truck and the rear is the LSD versionI was going to wait til the engine is in and I can see how she drives before changing the differentials. I would love to be able to drive at decent highway speeds and get good mileage.

The engine swap takes place next week and I will have bunch of photos.
I am taking out the AC system (no need for it in Humboldt, CA) and putting in a big ol front mount intercooler along with cockpit boost controller and EGT/Boost gauges where the old radio use to be.

The next question is, does my 199k mileage transmission need a rebuild to handle the diesel?

The place to find 7.5 3.54 gears is in a flaty Starion or the early RWD Dodge/Mitsu cars ...Same gears as in the front of the 4 cyl montys and trucks...To bad I just recycled some ...No clue anyone would want them ...

I would reman the trans at 199k the oil burner motor would be to hard on the small trans

I've got an LSD 3.90 rear and standard front from a MM ready to go in so that should allow for 60-65 mph and great MPG. Syncro/bearings/seals all getting redone on the tranny.

Very excited to see what this big front mount intercooler does for the power...

Happy Holidays to everyone out there! I just got the 4d56 into the engine bay after rebuilding the transmission and adding in the 3.54 gears into both diffs. I took the rear diff from a MM and the rear diff from a Starion (used just the ring and pinion) and everything fit great. The air conditioning is coming out for a big front mount intercooler. I will post pictures and videos in January.

Looks like I will be going with this intercooler from a company in Australia.

If anyone has had experience upgrading the turbo on the 4d56 id like to know your experience. I read on another forum that this was a good upgrade.

Some progress here...intercooler mounted along with the water/fuel separator. Still figuring out the wiring for the tach and glow plug to mate up with the mk1 diesel cluster from the UK. The K&N Apolo intake is next along with the 2.5" exhaust. She started right up and rev'd smooth with no black smoke!

How much better does it run with the intercooler?

Nice to hear from you again. Hey, I haven't put the intercooler in yet because I'm still trying to locate one that will fit. But I'm running the rig without it and no problems so far. Mileage isn't that much better than the gasser, though. I'm hoping the intercooler will change that.

I get 24-26 mpg with extremely heavy 37's loaded or unloaded you should be getting about the same. My 12V v6 only got 10 mpg with the 37s and even less when loaded.

My mpg with 4D55 in my old '88 2 door automatic was about 25mpg on 31" tires and about the same on 33's but with less power. Far better than any 4G54 (2.6L) I ever owned, milage never made up for what I spent on the setup but the cool factor was way there and so was the power. BOOOOST!!!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

My 6G74 (3.5L) gets 15-18mpg on 35's in my gen 2, I don't think fuel economy and Montero go together at all. Montero's are just plain fun and that's the price of admission (as our resident Bullworker would say).
