Getting the Wheeling Fever
I belong to many other forums. I guess I have a lot of interest. None of them are as annoying as this one with pop up ads, none are as slow as this one and all have much better features for a better end user experience. With that said. The software isnt cheap and you need more than an admin to change it. There is a lot of programming involved but I woulf agree this site is using old technology and could benefit from an upgrade.

Rather than [censored] about it, im gonna offer a solution.

Web hosting doesnt cost that much.

I'll donate money to the owner of the board (whoever that is) and if everyone that uses this board donated $5 we could probably cover operating costs for a long time.

Or maybe the owner doesnt care and sold out to make money off the adverts. Anyone know?

Forgot when they started, but not been a real long time. They are terrible though.

Has there ever been any further thought into adding features like having the ability to tag people or "like" buttons and being able to add pics straight from a phone. Making it somewhat more up-to-date. Not saying make it like Facebook but wouldn't be a terrible idea? Just a thought

More and more people seem to be migrating to Expeditionportal for these reasons, hopefully 4x4wire will get some updates and hang in there.

Why the hell do I have to "X" out the pop up window ads in the RH corner EVERY SINGLE TIME i click a new window? ...

I have no pop-ups on any forum especially this one. BTW, there are few to no forums that don't do something stupid. If you think this is bad, try the Montero Sport forum that Jay runs.

Anyway, you can fix this by ...

Installing Firefox and then install the Firefox Add-On called 'NoScript'.

After you install this stuff, go to www.4x4wire.com. In the lower right there will be a 'Options' box. Click on that and 'Permanently Allow' 4x4wire.com. DO NOT allow any of the other sites. One or more of those are what's causing your problems.

This works for all sites on the Internet. Some will need more allowed or just the main site to allow full functionality so you have to play around a little until you get the hang of what's going on. Just 'Temporarily Allow' stuff while you're playing. Do NOT 'Permanently Allow' anything unless you are absolutely sure that's what you want and you're doing the right thing.

I've been using this solution for years. Its a good way to cut down on your exposure to malicious web sites, too. I do IT security and this is the best thing I've come up with. A little clunky at first but you get the hang of it. smile

THAT was what i was wondering. They seem to have a good following. Silly pop-ups make this site seem less serious.

Why yes I do know... Or at least have an inkling which I'll use to voice my theory/opinion on this...

1) popup ads... These forums and this site mainly relies on Google Adsense advertising. There are also some paid advertisers.

2) the forum software is 'dated' at best but a switch to another forum package would require a massive rewrite of this page since much of it is integrated.

3) I'm not sure we have the talent or manpower on staff to perform this migration.

4) if you're willing to literally pay thousands (my WAG is tens of thousands) so the forum can hire someone to migrate 'everything' over...

Now we probably could do a rewrite of the site using new forum software while retaining the old forum as a big archive but I don't know that the website owner is willing to invest in the effort.

As for other sites like the Portal, realize that the Portal's forums and forum advertisers are probably not their primary revenue generator. The bulk of their business revenue most probably comes from the magazine and its advertisers which only further helps drive their forum advertising. A completely different business all together.

whoa, im not asking for any flashy or special, this forum is clunky and old but it works fine. I'm just asking for no pop up ads.

I would refer to the long time success of GalantVR4.org ; if you're not logged in there's a simple stationary banner at the top for ads, when you are logged in there's no ads at all. a very simple and clean forum, no images in signatures, no avatar images.

tagging people and 'likes' are a bit extreme for a technical forum with a social side bar.
