Getting the Wheeling Fever
Looking for a decent V6 auto SWB Gen 1. I've been checking Craigslist pretty regularly, and also have checked Cars.com, Autotrader.com and Ebay.

Any other tips?

Body Damage is Cool
Worth a shot, check out Mitsubishi Montero USA Garage Sale on Facebook. Use searchtempest.com it will allow you to expand your search area. Without looking individually at each city.

Need a Spot
Use searchtempest.com It searches craigslist nationwide. There's a 1985 Montero in Las Vegas for $500 Those are the type of deals I look for.

It took me 6 months to find the right one. Patience unfortunately.

While,I mat not know where it's best to find one, I sure can tell you rust regions are the best place NOT to get one.

88 Montero, StarQuest turbo, Kormex 5speed +tuff-pan w/phoenix f. stage2 clutch, 4in lift+33' tires, 4.875 lsd, short-throw shifter, Aisin hubs, SR big brakes, gen2 uca's, elantra alt, and so much more... 16g turbo w/hardpipes + 4.90 locking disk-brake axle soon (maybe lsd or aussie front??)

Here's all there is advertised on the West Coast right now:

http://fresno.craigslist.org/cto/5011833450.html

If you're ready to do a rescue (like I did):

http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/cto/5031213480.html

Pretty far for you, sure, but better chance of a rust-free frame. Also check junkyards - mine came out of a yard and was WELL worth the effort to revive the title to salvage status.

Happy hunting -

John

Move to AZ? Just kidding.

They seem to fall out of the sky at times, then all of a sudden you don't see any for sale for a month or two.

I'd seriously take heed to the advice to avoid any from rust-prone areas. It makes a huge difference, as an example, aside from faded paint and little stuff like dust, my '87 that has been sitting patiently in the driveway for 11 years still has zero rust on it anywhere. Zero. You can still take apart the stock exhaust with ordinary hand tools and no PB Blaster or anything.
