Looks like Europe gets it first next year as a 2016 Pajero. In true Volkswagen fashion, the U.S. gets it a year later than everyone else. New Montero to be unveiled this summer

Not too bad looking. Amazing that after all the different motors, they are going back to a 3.0 v6. Hopefully they offer the supercharged version as a non-hybrid too. I want one with the same paint scheme that the test vehicle has!
Blacktero: 90 Montero Lwb V6 RS Model. 16" Toyota Alloy Rims, Dual Bouncy's; Gen II Front Rotors & Calipers; Rear LSD
Sraider: 87 Raider 2.6 base. Work yet to be done.

That 3.0 is the new one, not related to the old one at all. It's called the 6B31, and i really hope we get this truck because it's a body on frame solid axle wheeling machine.
As i posted on Exportal i love that 3.0, heaps better power than the 3.5 DOHC and it's proven to be really reliable and takes abuse like it doesn't even care.
Pulls 90% of its torque at 2000RPM so when you want to go fast it's ready.

Instead of dreary old black & white polygons, imagine red & grey or some other combo of the official Mitsu race colors!

Not crazy about the looks. Then again I was never a Sport looks fan. Article says only 224HP, holy under powered Bat Man! To compete you would need to be closer to 300hp. My third issue would be if there is no locker option, then forget it. For me a baseline 4x4 needs to be 270hp+, preferably closer to 300HP and a stock rear locker package option. Given the options on the market, its silly to puck down 10s of thousands for anything less. If Mits does not compete again, the sales will be left in the cold.

I'll bet off the line it whips up on the comparable 4 runner and X-terra, like I said that 6B31 is a beast and mine was just the 220HP model.

Lloyd, are you missing your Xterra again? I don't mind it, but I'm not clear what role it has in the line up... is it the sport replacement? If so, are they going to keep the silly "sport" naming convention, or simply call it the Paj/Monteo/Shogun period? Or is there still the full size flagship model coming as well? the whole sport naming thing has irritated me for years, whether it was the outlander or the Montero. Its a different vehicle, it needs a different name. But I digress, and maybe I'm the only one? In any event, is this the sport replacement? I don't mind it, but I'd still like a gate/spare on the back. Again, maybe that's just me?

They've totally missed the boat several times now and this is no different. For a vehicle that is supposed to be their "flagship" SUV (no, not a crossover, that's was the Outlander's job) they are still not hitting the mark.
The Outlander PHEV was a complete failure/waste of time. I charge/spend ALOT of time down at the Mitsu HQ in Cypress. Even the iMiev was not a success here for them. I even tested the Outlander PHEV.
This is going to be no different, a complete waste. My Rav looks better and bigger then that and the Montero was supposed to be a BIG vehicle!
I agree with Lloyd, I see that and I think Sport right away!

I disagree, I think the new 3rd generation (Challenger) Sport is more Montero than the last two generations of fullsize Montero. I think they should release it as just the Montero period. No confusion just a truck based 4x4 SUV like the first two generations of Montero and Montero Sport.
This one looks like it will easily accommodate 33's and be a great wheeling rig. The 2nd generation Challenger was larger than the first so with the trend of growing vehicles this new one might be about the size of a Gen 2 Montero.
Again I've got nothing against the Gen 3 Montero but it's of no use to me and the price of the current Pajero vs the Challenger they'd be hard pressed to sell a fullsize Montero here again.

The Xterra was a dog off the line, but fast otherwise. Also liked the clean belly, after market support and stereo. But the reliability was startling bad, and the bottoming out was enough to make you blow your brains out. Our new 4 Runner is VERY outdated, feels 10yrs behind the new F150, and its slow as a snail even with 270HP, but its damned solid and likely to be reliable. Not saying a new Montero has to be the best of everything, but 50HP less then the nearest competitor, mediocre looks......It HAS to find a nitch. The Xterras Cheap, the Gen 5 4 Runner is solid, The Raptor fly's and the Rubicon is an off-road killer. What will the new Montero be known for? Another half hearted me too SUV will die again. As far as a tail gate? Hell yes, that is the Montero heritage and Jeep is the only one doing it. Stupid dirt dragging spare tires are annoying.
They still seem to be insisting on a big uber highway Montero was well. I say call it something else if you must make it.
