Hey guys,
I finished the heads on the 1990 LWB and the next day this.

My wife was driving her 2001 Gen III and at about 1/2 mile from home she noticed a strange noise, she knows her truck like no other, and drove it home right away. When she called me I was sure it was the idler pulley as it has been making a vague chirp, so when I got home from the office I pulled the Montero in the garage but the noise was really bad as if the bearing had given up completely.

Under close inspection I noticed the belt at the crankshaft pulley was out of alignment, I checked the bolt and it was hand tight shocked . This is a new bolt that was installed when my mechanic did the timing belt 8 months ago +/-.
This morning I took everything apart and indeed the bolt was loose and the crankshaft was loose as well, it had sheared off the little round key and scrape a bit of the plastic and the back part of the pulley.

Noting seems to be damaged other that the scraping so I need to remove the round key and use a new bolt. Should I use thread locker or oil as per the FSM?

I am trying to post some pics, here is the link to the pics:

GEN III crankshaft pulley pics

Thanks,
Javy

Looking for the parts online, I am afraid that round key comes with the timing sprocket. I do not have the tools to remove the timing sprocket. Now, can the key be removed from the new sprocket?

OK, No damage to the timing sprocket. Tomorrow will remove the roll pin , will install a new pulley, new roll pin and a new bolt with thread locker opposite to plain motor oil as per the FSM.

Thanks,
Javy

eep, well i guess the compression pin did it's job. how'd the repair go?

i just stripped one of my hub bolts repacking the front wheel bearings, then the bolt i welded in to it just sheared. guess the left one will have to wait a little longer till i motivate to drill it out and try a better bolt than a rusty old one dug up from he bolt bin smirk

It worked excellent. It happen that the SOB mechanic did not use the new bolt I had for the damper, he used the same bolt that was there.
Bought a new damper ($197)+ bolt ($7) some blue thread locker and fabricated my own adapter to hold the damper while torque was applied.

It worked like a charm, the Montero is back on the road as if nothing happened.

At the end, the issue was caused by human laziness.

happened to me on my Gen 2.5. Bolt broke off & i had to drill it out with a hardened bit. Buggered up the hole a bit, so I eventually re tapped the hole to take a m16 fine x 50 mm bolt. Plus lock tighted it on It aint coming loose again in a urry.
