Mystery Coolant Leak.... #1101299 05/19/16 04:53 PM

So I have this 95 SR that was due for a timing belt change, water pump... all that. A couple weeks ago it overheated at random and then began leaking coolant. As of last week, it appeared to be coming out from inside the plastic of the timing belt cover so I thought "Great, the water pump is dead, I needed to do that anyway".

I took the whole front of the engine apart and did all that regular maintenance that I needed. In the process, I checked the freeze plug on the passenger side of the engine because it seemed like there could be a leak from there as well after a conversation with Toasty. It looked fine. Everything else I could see with the whole front of the engine off looked fine. I put it all back together again and still a substantial leak as I am filling her back up with coolant. I took the intake and alternator off again to get a better look and stuck one of my mini-cams in the area to look around and the following is what I found....

This is on the right side (passenger), basically directly behind the alternator. There is water actively running down the side of the block there, but not coming from the freeze plug. it runs from just above and just forward of it, but for the life of me, I can't understand what is going on. Someone please enlighten me....

edit:
It seems I have been away too long, I don't remember how to do images right. If those don't work for you, please let me know.

I apologize for the minor configuration error. At the bottom of you message block screen is an option to add files. You can add 3 files about 1 meg each in size.

The method you used is more for providing URL links to files.

If the leak is not coming from the freeze plug, is it coming from the head gasket???

It does not appear to be, no. But then it is really hard to see on that front right edge up underneath everything else. I attached photos here because I don't know how to describe the location accurately enough. Its basically the front right corner of the block, behind the alternator, directly behind the timing belt flange, next to the freeze plug...

I try to be helpful... 😄😄

You either have a freeze plug or head gasket. You may need to strip the parts out of the way to see. Or, can you pressurize the system and help isolate the leak???

1. Radiator pressure test.
2. Check intake-head water joint.

Fasteddy,

The radiator is not the source of the leak, that I know. Where is the intake-head water joint located?

Body Damage is Cool
Glad you posted this now as I have a similar leak which I can't find as well. I too thought it might be frost plug, but now I think it may be coming from the PS port for the water pump. The leak is non-pressure but very slow.

I tried to remove the power steering pump bracket to get a better look but after removing every bolt I could fine it was still stuck on. I'm going to do a TB service so I can strip everything and see what I can see.

Is it possible it's from a bolt that requires thread sealant as the bolt goes into the water jacket?

OK, this is weird. I've had this leak for about 2 weeks. On Wednesday I had my wife take the truck to work to see if the leak got worse under pressure. She checked the coolant level before leaving work for home and said it didn't need any.

I just checked to see if her drive home lowered the coolant level. Now I can't see any leak - not a drop, and coolant levels are full.

So I don't know what is happening. Do I do the TB service or not???

Hope Dylan finds his leak so I can find out what to look for.

Dylan, you might try dye to trace the leak once you tear it down again.
