Any ideas? Starts, but seems starved for gas, surges. Definitely not drivable.

Things done: Checked the throttle body, Checked the ECU, Tried a new ECU, New fuel pump...

Thoughts??

Seems a lot like the infamous idle air control valve (IAC). Here is a link on how to clean it. http://www.4x4wire.com/mitsubishi/tech/throttle_body/

Thanks DJPASS7. Definitely not the issue on mine. I should have been more clear on the throttle body piece I mentioned above. That has been done. Still no bueno.

Man... I could sure use some advice. I have searched HIGH and low... On this forum, on other forums.. Even on other car forums.

Basically what I traced down to the MAF sensor (or so I thought). I was able to start the truck and keep it running if I had the MAF Sensor unplugged, but if I touched the gas she would dies. Got another MAF Sensor off a truck that had been running fine before being wrecked. Plugged in and the Montero started and ran, but same issue, touch the gas and it dies.

I have been through the TPS, IAC, ECU, MFI Relay, Fuel Pump, MAF Sensor, cleaned the throttle body... Im at my wits end here.

Any ideas??

Have you checked for clogged fuel filter or injectors?

Can you very slowly depress the gas pedal and get it to rpm higher? Is the idle OK? I would have thought TPS as that's the sensor that tells the computer to give it a shot of gas when depressing gas pedal.

Maybe try using starter fluid to give it a shot as you open the throttle, see if that helps. If so I'd still look to TPS.

Cheesegrater: yes, actually changed the fuel filter too.

pcc: I'll try that. Thanks for the advice. Maybe I'll try another TPS.

I am going to check a few more things. I'll report back. This one is baffling. I'll make sure no matter what to document what I find in case someone else runs into this problem at some point.

Did you test fuel pressure? You said you replaced filter and pump. But, did you verify the pressure? Your surging can come from uneven fuel flow. And, fuel systems are pressurized to the point that a bad gas cap not sealing can cause performance issues.
