Just after a bitter cold snap my 88 22re truck starts, runs 2-3 seconds, then dies . . . time after time. Pulled a code 41 - tps. Disconnected the tps and it does exactly the same thing as it does when connected. Sound like a bad sensor or something else?

Yes. Disconnecting a sensor doesn't cure problems related to it. Generally a TPS failure will cause a "limp home" condition where the engine still runs but very poor. With the code indicating TPS failure, replacing it should clear the code.

Another point to check....

As you indicated this happened after a cold snap, inspect your vacuum hoses for cracks/leaks. Hoses do get brittle as they age and slight engine movement could crack them.
