I'm new and I've been looking into putting a Toyota 8, Nissan H233b or Mitsu 9.5 in place of my Dana 35 in preparation of a diesel swap. I would put this in the Jeep area, but it pertains more to axles than it does the Jeep. I need a ratio in the neighborhood of a 3.5x. The Mighty Max's came with a 3.54, can I run those gears in a 9.5 axle, or are they different? I haven't been able to find much on the subject. Thanks in advance.

Joe

No, You can get 4.27, 4.63, 4.90, 5.29 though. You might be able to source a set of higher ratio gears from a V6 Mighty Max and run the 9" rear axle or the 9.5" with a little work.

Alternatively you could get some taller tires and run the deeper gears? Good excuse for some meaty tires.

The 3.545 gears would be the 8" diff and not helpful.

"D50/MMs came with 3 different possible gearing options
3.545 used in certain 2wd trucks let you achieve optimal fuel mileage
3.909 most common gear ratio used in about our trucks most 4x4 came with them for sure
4.222 rarely seen in the D50/MMs only seen so far in 4x4s so far primarily seen in Dodge Raiders/Mitsubishi Monteros"

Thanks Toasty. As of now, I already plan on running 31s, possibly 33s if I can find a set cheap enough. The motor revs really low, so it's optimal cruising band is right around 1800-2200 rpm. I would prefer to keep it in the sub 2000 range if I can, just to minimize wear and tear. The motor is practically brand new (only 62 hours), so it has a long life ahead of it, and I want to keep it that way.

Are there any companies that make gear sets for the 9? I know the only place to get gears for the 9.5 is from Mitsubishi, which limits me to the stock gears.

Joe

I have two MM with the 4.22 gears in the yard now.

Several years ago, I made this simple chart. Tonight I added the 3.545 gears for your information. The Gen 1 Dodge diesel guys that try to get the rpm as low as reasonably possible like the Dana 61 / 71 combination with 3.07 gearing, and I've not seen Mitsu with such a low gear.

Cheers,
Russell
