Looking for 3.8 swap info #1103465 05/22/17 06:57 PM

Need a Spot
I have a '99 Montero with 300k on it. It was a non-running project last fall, then the weather got bad and I've done nothing with it. I'm getting back to work on it, and it just so happens my local wrecking yard has a 2004 Endeavor. I'm looking for info on a 6G75 swap, and I'm finding lots of threads posted by people who want to do it, have researched doing it, and rumors about somebody who actually did it, but those threads all seem to die with no indication that a swap was actually done.

I've read in several threads that the block swaps with minor mods for mounting brackets, and I'd just use my heads and accessories. I've read in another thread about somebody using the block and heads, but that was some guy in Australia. Nothing I've seen is clear on detail, or pictures.

When I search I come up with lots of stuff on Eclipse swaps, but nothing much related to the Montero. If anybody knows of any threads you could link me to, I'd appreciate it. Also interested in any other input or thoughts in terms of what I'd use (block only, block & heads), and any issues other than tapping a few new holes. I have a limited window of opportunity to get this motor, so I want to get on this quick if it'll work out. I don't know how many miles are on the Endeavor, but it's in pristine condition except for the back where it was hit. Almost no wear on the seats, so I'm assuming it's fairly low miles, and there only so much time / effort / money that I want to spend on my 300k motor.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

OK, well....slightly more successful in my searching. Found this thread on a 3.8 swap.

I haven't gotten too far into it since I'm on a lunch break and have to get back to work, but it seems to be a Galant 3.8. I assume that's the same as the Endeavor block, yes?

3.8l swap

The Galant and Endeavor use the same engine I think as the swap linked above.

I know the front wheel drive blocks are different from the rear/four wheel drive blocks for the 3.8l. The eclipse gets a lot of its power from MIVEC. The valve used to switch MIVEC sticks out from the back of the head ... not a problem on a sideways mounted engine but interferes with firewall on a north/south installation. Valve for the later 3.8l Montero's could be sourced from anyplace that got the newer (2007) Montero's ... like Mexico? I think the mounts might also be different.

good luck!

Cams may have a different profile in the Galant as it will be cam'd for HP&Torque for a car versus an SUV where torque is more important.

This can be confirmed by checking CAPS program using vin's from both models. Can get a vin on any number of car sales sites.
