My Montero 1G left wheel is not engaging in 4x4. At first I assumed the hub went out (manual hubs). While underneath I noticed I can pull the axle inward about 2". Now I'm thinking the retaining 'snap' ring broke or failed. What do you think? Can anyone tell me what size/style ring it uses? The Montero is an hour from the nearest parts store so I want to take what I need with me...or it will be a long day driving back and forth. Thanks!

Yes. I concur with you....the little C-clip.

I have tried to find the part number via normal sources:
oemmitsubishiparts.com
mitsubishipartswarehouse.com
rockauto.com

Parts store may have better luck

It's a Mitsubishi part. I found one at a dealer a few years ago but I didn't buy it. Instead I found snap rings with the same thickness and then grinded off the little loops where snapring pliars would go. It seems to be the same snap ring on the inner and outter ends so you can size it by just taking the one off the outter end behind the hub cover. I haven't noticed any problems with that solution.
