Wrecked my 91 4 door, 5 speed Montero – wondering if I can use parts to convert my 91 4 door, automatic Montero so I can flat tow it behind my motorhome
1 – The automatic does not have a Neutral detent for the transfer, so I don’t trust it to remain locked out; Can the 5 speed transfer be mounted to the automatic
2 – Believe it can be done – change the automatic to a 5 speed, using the transmission, transfer, drive shafts and clutch; Question is, has anyone done this and is it a major undertaking

This conversion has been performed and documented here before. You have both, thus have all the parts and pieces. Like other conversions, there will be some work other than just wrenching. There are wire harness differences, the firewall will have to be cut for the master cylinder, bosses and welded nuts for the hydraulics are not in place.

Playing D.A. only, have you looked into a rear driveshaft disconnect? They were widely available in the 90s.
