Gave the mighty Sporty a good run this week down the highway.

Just over 600km round trip.

Here in the NT on the open road we have 130 km (80 miles) per hour speed limits.

Sporty ss at on that reasonably well. Did lose a little speed on some small inclines.
I let some air out of the tyres on the return trip as she was a bit nervous on the way down with 40psi in them. Made for a tiresome trip requiring a lot of concentration on the rough roads.

Dropped down to 33 psi on the return trip and it was a lot better.

Now just need to sort out my fuel economy, averaging around 14-15 litres per hundred at the moment giving me a safe range of 350-380 km per tank instead of 500-550 that I used to get. So before any one suggests it's the modifications my fuel economy had gone bad before I started modifying it but as it was running around town I didn't worry about it to much.

Sporty is running a bit rich and I am not sure where to start. You can smell fuel from the exhaust fumes when you first start it up and it is idling

Could it be a semi blocked cat or bad O2 sensor or possibly another sensor somewhere. There is and has never been a engine light showing signifying a fault.

Was going to wait until I have fitted the new extractors and 2.25. Inch mandrel bent exhaust to see if that fits the issue first. Don't want to pour money into parts trying to find what could be causing the excess fuel economy.

Cheers Chris

A blocked cat should not affect fuel economy as much as it would affect overall performance. An engine has to breath in order to work.

The O2 sensor could lead to rich mixture.

Does it have an OBDII diagnostic port that you can access to reset the on-board computer to compensate for tire and gear changes??

Well a while ago I had the coolant system refurbished. Only thing that wasn't done was the heater core. You guessed it a couple weeks ago I had the dreaded internal drip of coolant.

New replacement Hester core ordered, came back off holidays and then with my youngest son we set out to rip out the old and refit the new. Decided to rip the whole dash out to do the replacement. Three very long days later and walla, all back together only to find it still leaks.

After lots of panicking thinking we had cracked the heater core reinstalling it we noticed that one of the heater hose clamps had lost its tension so off to get a new hose clamp and get rid of the factory one. Tightened up and no more leaks.

Decided to fit a low coolant Alarm as well. Finished wiring that up on the weekend. How good are the fuse double adapters. No more splicing into other wires.

Sporty has been performing well doing quite a few highway miles of late sitting on 130 easily here in the NT whilst my Disco was off the road much to the disgust of my son (no car for him).Still having high fuel consumption issues though. Will be following that up once the hip pocket recovers.

Cheers, Chris

When was the last time you changed your timing belt? If you change it now before it breaks, it will be much better because last time I did mine I got the timing too advanced and I have no top end power. Consumes more fuel now because you need to floor it just to keep speed.

Well, finally had my ceramic coated wildcat extractors fitted along with new exhaust. 2 " hi flow cat into 2 1/4 exhaust with hi flow muffler fitted along with a new O2 sensor.

Impressions so far power delivery feels smoother and it feels like it comes up to speed easier with less throttle input. Exhaust note at idol is nice and deep however it is bloody loud inside under power and drones. Going to see about having another straight through resonator or muffler fitted to quiten itdown and hopefully the shop can tune the drone out.

Will see over the next few weeks if my economy improves with the new bits fitted.

Also trial fitted my custom rock sliders purchased a couple of years ago. Wasn't able to fit them until I had the exhaust mounting point changed at the front. They look the goods, taken back off for now. Just need to clean them up and have them recoated before fitting them up permanently. Tossing up between paint or powder coat.

Cheers, Chris

2nd straight through muffler fitted today. Quite d the Spotry down nicely, but still has a nice deep growl at idle.

Just need to fix my leaking rear pinion seal and will then do a couple of trips down the highway and see if economy and range has improved.

It has been a little while between updates.

Sporty has been running quite well apart from the fuel consumption.

I tried three different O2 sensors and they all caused The CEL to come on requiring me to refit the old factory one. Last time I priced a,factory one through Kia they wanted over $400 for one.😡

I have replace the starter motor after over20years of sterling service. Who said Sportages were unreliable😜.

I also replace my SAAS sports Steerig wheel as the foam fell apart. Have a much better one now that is full leather. It is a Autotechnia Targa . Great steering wheel, lovely feel and has a padded leather horn button. Should have got this one from the start. Feels somuch better than the SAAS one.

Replace the Airflowmeter as well which led to a slight improvement on my economy issues which leads me to believe I might need to stump up the dollars for a factory 02 sensor from Kia. 😰 if Iwant my economy to improve.

To combat my limited fuel range one my mates has modified my spare wheel carrier to include a jerry can holder. Looks great and works really well. The spare tyre carrier was moved over as far as we could on the rear rack to accomodate the installation. I am very happy with the result and after testing it for a while with a full 20litre jerry can I am happy to look at having the rear carrier powder coated now.

Also fitted new stereo speakers as the factory one had crapped out ages ago. So good to have clear music again in the car.Just need to get a new modern stereo now with blue tooth. Going to look at installing a double din unit. I purchased a double din fitting kit awhile ago. Can’t rush these things.

Unfortunately with photo bucket crapping out I am unable to post pictures of the new sports steering wheel and the jerry can holder or haven’t tried in a while as I diont want to pay for something I hardly use.

Well that about it for now. Hope to see some more use on the site again as it has gone extremely quiet.

Cheers, Chris

Good to see you stick with this rig. Our Mitsubishi often operate better with OE parts.
