Hello, I can't seem to get this seal to stop leaking, I've tried a speedi-sleeve and new seal, new u- joints had the shaft balanced. It didn't leak until I pulled it to rebuild the engine, also the 4th gear is hard to come out of, not sure if it's related. Thanks for any info. Mike

What's the easiest way to check it? Do I have to pull the transfer case?

Pull and tug on the driveshaft, see what kind of motion is there.

4th gear issue not related to the engine rebuild, but could be a sign of imminent failure.

Well, there's some play in it but it's hard to tell if it's the output shaft or the yoke. Also the bolts were lose on the shifter and it always had issues with going into 2nd gear, if you pulled it towards you when shifting it kinda went into nowhere. You had to pull it straight back into 2nd. Now that's it all tightened up it seems to hang up in 4th. Trany has about 40k since rebuild.

Well, I believe I found the problem, after years of oil leaking the tranny mount was like jelly! it looked good until I did the test you suggested and notice I was moving the whole tranny/transfer about an inch both ways. I believe that's what was destroying the seals. Now to order a new seal, I had a extra mount on the shelf and now it only moves about a millimeter. Thank you Sir..
