Hi All,
I'm in the process of replacing the current CD unit in my 89 LWB with an OEM Mitsubishi unit with the equalizer. Luckily the PO used an adapter harness with the unit in it and I'm not dealing with any cut wires. This current radio works ok and gets a decent signal.

I bought an OEM radio and had shipped. The seller claimed it worked etc. I installed the unit and I get no reception, it is just white noise. I removed radio and checked all connections and still nothing. I operated the radio out of the instrument panel while plugged in and it got great reception. Once I put back in there was nothing again. With the radio outside of the dash, I tried to wiggle the wires and could not re-create the issue of white noise.

So in summary, the radio only works when loosely placed on the floor and not properly installed. Can this be an issue with my installation or internal to the unit? The FSM provides no internal troubleshooting on radios with my symptoms. All connections were fully seated.

Mine was like that too, unfortunately i don't have a fix for you. My thought was that the socket for the antenna is dead so it only works when the radio is out or you are very near a signal. I fixed it by installing a different stock radio. There are a lot of period correct radios from other Monteros and cars, I got one of the later ones with the smooth buttons. It doesn't look as 80's as the others but it works really well. I had the exact same radio you have to begin with but now i have the single din which is ok because i got a single din solid wood faceplate for the cubby which looks really nice.

Thanks for the input. I was hoping this one could be saved, but no luck. There is supposedly one in a yard nearby I can check out and install in parking lot to check function.

You mention other period correct units. Is that only up to 1991 for the Gen1’s or also Gen2. Can you share a pic of yours?

Hi Toasty,
I picked up another equalizer radio and installed in my Montero. I am having the same issues, so I believe it is a reception issue and will start checking the antenna connection to the radio. Maybe the wire is not making a good connection when the radio is fully installed.

Let's hope so, maybe they just suck. I got mine from a base model '93, you should be able to use most any Mitsu radio from '95 or older.

I spent some time working on the radio tonight. Removed the unit. Made sure all the wires were routed well. Re-installed and made sure everything was tight. Removed antenna, cleaned the threads, reinstalled. Still getting the poor reception issue, unless I hold the antenna wire at the back of the radio with my hand. I can turn the issue on and off by doing this, I wasn't sure if there was some sort of amplifier that I'm providing etc?
