My '87 Montero is in beautiful condition overall, but just the other day I noticed a patch of the factory clearcoat on the top of the front fender (next to the hood) is flaking off. I suppose, after 31 years, that it's inevitable, but I'd like to stop it before it goes further and makes the whole truck look ratty. It's the only spot on the truck that has done so, and it's about the size of a post-it note.

I'm not a body & fender guy at all, so my first thought was to remove all of the loose clearcoat, feather the edges to reduce the chances of peeling, then cover the area with some clear auto lacquer.

Is there a better way to go about it?
