Hello,

I just picked up a 1990 Montero and am looking for some help finding info on a few things. I came from 4runners and Land Cruisers, so I'm use to being able to find information easily; however, it is not that simple with these old Monteros.

- Can anyone point me in the direction of finding a timing belt DIY and interval?
- I have found that I should have a 28 spline 8in front diff, and 28 spline 9in rear diff... Are there drop in lockers available for each diff without having to do a full axle swap? I believe I have found an ARB for the rear, but I cant find much for the front.
- Does anyone have experience running 7in LED headlights to replace the factory sealed beams? On that note, where can I find aftermarket/JDM corner markers and tail lights?

Thanks in advance!

I plan on building this into a hunting/expedition vehicle so I will get a thread going on that soon.

-Travis

Welcome!

What model do you have - 2 door, 4 door? Which engine/transmission?

As to lighting, I'm not yet sold on the LEDs available. (I should be more specific: I'm not impressed with any of the units available at decent cost. The JW Speaker 8700 are awesome, but they're also $350 each!) Then you have the issues with cold lamps and snowy/icy conditions...no thanks.

On the recommendation of Daniel Stern, I'm currently doing a swap from sealed beams to the semi-legendary Koito H4 units, complete with new wiring harness. I'll let you know how they work out.

Sorry should have added that... It is a 4 door 3.0 v6 auto.

I just did the timing belt this past weekend for my 3.0 V6 SWB Raider, same engine. The factory manual can be downloaded from mitsubishilinks.com (look in the stickies in this forum for other links) and it gives a pretty detailed description of how to replace the timing belt. Go ahead and replace the water pump because its buried in there as well and it takes a while to get in that deep so you might as well while you're in there.

Well, I'll let everyone else chime in then — I've got the SWB with the 2.6l I4 and 5-speed, and would be of no help at all to you!

(I'd actually like to have a 4-door, as it would be more practical for carrying stuff, but don't need any more projects.)

I was wondering about the aftermarket tail lights and markers as well. Are they legal? Do they need wiring re-routed? There are some on Ebay I've seen. Ok ratings...

Those are the "all the world except the US" rear lights. Since the vehicles we got have combined stop/turn signals, they require some re-wiring in order to fit those lights. I'm considering going through the trouble of doing it, because a) they look cool and b) they add a layer of safety by separating the brake and turn signals.

To the best of my knowledge, they are completely legal.

That'd be cool if you do! Hopefully you'll post your findings/progress as well. I might do the conversion too, sometime in the future. Are you thinking to get the ones off Ebay?

There are no options for the 4-cyl Gen1, although many (perhaps most) of them came with limited slip rear differentials. That's pretty much it, to the best of my knowledge.

The V6 models used different differentials. I believe ARB makes air lockers for the front, and I understand the locking rear axle from the Gen2 or 2.5 models will swap in. Someone else will have to chime in on that, however, because I'm not sure about the details.
