Hello all. My first post here about my fairly new to me 91 Montero RS

Since purchasing the car 4 months ago I have done almost 5,000 miles including a 3,000 mile trip home. Montero was supposedly entirely rebuilt and I trust the seller.
About a month ago I started smelling gas out of the exhaust. This happens on cold starts, after running for a while, rainy day, hot day etc. The car drives amazing, have no noticeable loss of power or any symptoms that to my knowledge indicate a misfire. Sometimes vibrates at idle. The seller mentioned it is either a misfire or the Montero could be running rich from elevation difference and a computer reset would solve it (Utah-NY).

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Mmmm I dont think the ecu has anything to really do with elevation change, especially since that is one of the bennifits of FI. Plus you've been driving for a few months now with no issues. That being said. I'd check oxygen sensor, timing, and for a leaking/stuck Fuel injector. Also you mentioned the engine was rebuilt. Just to be sure everything was done with correct specs I'd check compression just to be sure. Give us and update.

Leak down on the injectors not a bad idea.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Been away and didn't get a chance to drive the car until this weekend.

I am thinking it is the injectors as well. At idle when the cylinders are cycling I can feel the hiccup.

To make things a bit more complicated, pulled over at a gas station and then car would not start, no crank nothing. After 5 minutes or so it reluctantly fired up. Since then this has happened a few times. Any ideas on that?

Thanks

Start with ECU. Open it, look for leaky capacitors.
