I bought a 88 Raider last summer for my boys to learn how to drive. After a few hundred miles, the timing chain failed. After looking around for parts, I decided the Mitsubishi engine was going bye bye. I already had an extra AX-15 trans and NP231 t-case in the garage, so I figured I would just get a 2.5l and the dakota bellhousing and give it a shot.
Well, it was a lot of work, and I don't think I do this sort of thing again for a while...

I used a 2.5 from a 97 Wrangler with multi-port injection. That way I could avoid any security stuff in the ECU and it would fire up relatively easy.
I made some crude motor mount brackets so that I could use the original Raider mounts.
I also made a simple bracket to attach the original power steering pump and v-belt. I used the old style Delco alternator and v-belts instead of the 97 serpentine system.
I used the original radiator and the Jeep clutch fan. I got some cheap flexible metal radiator hoses due to the inlets and outlets being on the opposite sides.

I'm getting ready to recycle 3 different cars & trucks, and parts from multiple part outs, because no one wants to visit the Montero Ranch for numerous free things.
