89 V6 Raider stalls at same time, then runs fine #1105519 04/10/20 04:07 PM

Need a Spot
Hello all,

I have a 1989 Dodge Raider V6 manual with 145k. The truck shuts off after about the same time from starting. It will stall out like its flooded, and everything goes out, after it seems to struggle for a few seconds. If I wait a few minutes, it will start up like nothing is wrong, and seems to drive for as long as I want (hours) with no problems. But if I try to fire it up after the stall, it struggles to start and still chugs for a few seconds and then dies.

This issue happens regardless of the weather outside, and happens whether it is sitting idling in the driveway, or going 75 on the interstate (not fun), or anywhere in between. Seems like its about 15 minutes after starting. It stalled out at the exact same place on my drive to work three or four times now.

I just let it idle now for 15-20 minutes and then it shuts off, then after a few minutes I start it back up and it drives fine.

Engine has been nearly rebuilt (because of the notorious valve seal issue). New battery, alternator, dist cap, plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, and I tried out a new idle control unit also, but the issue continues.

Any ideas what this could be?

Any help is very appreciated.

Have you confirmed if you are lacking fuel or spark?

Thanks for the response.

Fuel pressure is good. But I'm not sure how to check the spark, while it is happening.

check your coil. it's probably shot. it builds heat/resistance and shuts down. when it cools it will start right up again. all you need to verify is a voltmeter and the specs in the fsm. hth.

Thanks Oso, I replaced the coil pretty recently.

Also, a loud knock noise comes from under the glove compartment a few seconds after it shuts off on its own. But not when I shut the car off manually.

Any thoughts?

My 89 had a similar issue. Turned out it was losing spark when the distributor got warm. Changed out dist and issue went away. Might be worth a swap with a good used one.

Finally wont run at all today, but drove it down to Denver this morning no problem for some work. Now its stuck in downtown Denver (not ideal). I tried your suggestion Chad and I put in a new distributor - no luck. Starts, but then it seems to flood out the engine quickly and then needs a few minutes before starting, and flooding? again.

This is the first really warm day of the year, could that be something? The entire ignition system has essentially now been replaced. Air system is clean, fuel system basically been replaced too. Could it be the ECU?

But if anyone has any other ideas before I drop 400 on an ECU please let me know?

Thanks for all the suggestions to everybody in the post!

I am still hoping there is someone who knows about the 3.0 motor out there. I have replaced the: ECU and 02 sensor as well at this point. Again, it floods at EXACTLY the same time after starting right at about 15 minutes. Then, if it is not too hot, it will start again and run fine the rest of the day as long as the motor does not cool down.

I think this almost has to be an issue tied to the ECU with timing on some kind of "choke". If anyone knows about this please respond. I see many places on the internet that people have similar issues - but I have yet to see anyone post the fix. Thanks for all the suggestions you guys have made, and any future ones.

There is a temp sensor that supplies coolant temp to the ECU. If it supplies the wrong temp to the ECU, the ECU may enrich the mixture too much. This may look like a "choke" problem. I don't recall if it can be tested in place with a multimeter.

There is also a heater hose that runs to/from the throttle body. If I remember, this prevented icing in certain conditions. It might be something to look at.

Also search for "wax pellet", it may be bad. I don't recall the symptoms when it fails.
