My life has been lacking excitement for some time now so I decided to throw a Hail Mary. I bought a 1997 Montero SR over the internet and I’m flying to attempt to drive it 1000miles back home to Las Vegas. It’s a 97 SR, rear locker, 137,000 miles and looks to be in decent shape. I guess the plan is to pick it up tomorrow, do an oil change, trans drain and fill, spark plugs and wires and send it. Has anybody else bought a sketchy Montero and immediately gone on a long trip? I’d love to hear about it, advice, words of caution, whatever.

I picked up the Monty. It idles pretty rough, oil pressure seems pretty low (10-30psi), lots of electrical gremlins (power windows, AC switch, lighting for the gauges, compass/thermometer, and probably more) But I think she’s got solid bones. It made the 100 mile trip to my sisters house, so what’s the harm in another 1100 miles? Gonna do plugs, wires, oil change and maybe some sea foam and hit the road tomorrow.

Trying to post some pics but not sure if it’s working

Man that was a grueling drive... 18hours of driving total, got food poisoning and pooped my shorts and blew up about 4 gas station restrooms, got a CEL 500miles in, drove thru the desert with no AC, but the old girl got me home. Gonna sleep for 24hours straight now and next week start diagnosing and ordering some parts.

Lol at the pooping shorts. That would be rough. At least she is a beauty!

Let me quickly list everything currently wrong with the Mont that I’ve found so far:
Smell of cigarette smoke
All 3 passenger windows inoperable
Drivers window has some chips missing on the edge (not sealing out the wind very well)
Power mirrors inoperable
Oil pressure and voltmeter reading incorrectly
Compass gauge pod not backlit
Several instrument bulbs not working
Flashing front tire indicators on the Super Select thing
A/C knob on dash does nothing ...I live in Las Vegas frown
Runs terribly, low power
Pretty bad vibration while driving, especially while in 4th gear low rpms high load, and in drive creeping forward with foot off brake. It’s got no name tires which I’m sure aren’t balanced very well
Oil is covering everything below the valve covers lol
And the Main issue: CEL cylinder 5 misfire

I think those are all the issues. We will find more no doubt. Right now I’m focusing on the check engine light so I can get this thing smogged and registered.
I ordered plugs, wires, coils, pcv, fuel and air filters, valve cover gaskets with plug seals, intake gasket.
Was considering timing belt and water pump but I need to get this thing registered ASAP. Planning on revisiting that once I get a little garage rented (they need the car registered first). Gonna be doing the first service in my apartment parking lot.

Started tearing into it this weekend but didn't get as far as i had planned. I'm finding the Montero to be a little challenging to work on but not too bad. I tore the engine down to the valve covers to replace those gaskets. Found more sludge and buildup than i was hoping for but nothing alarming. Took a peak at the T belt and microscopic cracks are visible, definitely needs to be changed ASAP. The previous owner wasn't big on maintenance it seems. Performed a compression test while I had access to the plugs.
Passenger cylinders: 155 155 155
Drivers side: 175 175 175
Oh well, that's good enough for me. Also when I reconnected the battery to crank over the motor for the test my alarm started blaring, at 9 o clock at night haha! But looked it up and all you need to do is hold the alarm LED down while turning the key in the ignition. Sorry neighbors!
Changed out the spark plugs of course and they were looking a bit rough. Tonight I'm ultrasonic cleaning the injectors and rebuliding them. Then shes going back together.

Thats one of the better plugs that came out. And a shot of inside the valve cover.

Just a quick update:

Tune up is complete and I’m pleasantly surprised and relieved at how much a difference it made. Truck isles pretty smooth and has plenty of power now, even at part throttle. And I managed to fix my blinking front axle light on accident!

The only bummer is the DMV is seriously impacted so I can’t even get this vehicle in my name until dec 30, so I haven’t really been motivated to work on it.
