Can any 12v ignition coil be swapped in ? May need mine replaced and after looking around for them $$$ I thought the heck with that, why cant I just use an old canister type, Mitsubishi has two wires going to it, so does the others. Anything special about the factory one over an aftermarket ?

Found an aftermarket coil that fits the bill I think. For a Jeep JK. 1 ohm primary 12k ohm secondary.
Mine shows. 1.2 ohm primary 12k ohm secondary.
Shaped the same only the input plug is different. Thats easy i think, one is positive other is negative correct ?

Is that the reading you got from your coil, or what the OEM specifications are?

If money is an issue, how about determining if the coil actually NEEDS to be replaced?
Go to mitsubishilinks.com and download the FSM (factory service manual). look in the ignition section. Pg 8-156 IIRC. That should give you the specs.
If it does need to be replaced then go to rockauto.com and buy an NGK for $15 or so.

Well the truck just shut off in the middle of the road, turned over but no spark, got it home and looked it over and no spark at all, removed the coil and bench tested and in the (dark) you could see a faint spark, coil was getting hot also. Seen signs of it arcing over to the laminates as well. Nothing else on the truck explains its actions. Got local parts store to order a replacement for only $40... Hopefully nothing else down the line is also out.

You should get on Facebook and ask for help there. I think the general community will be more your speed when it comes to how to throw parts at an issue until it's resolved. HTH

How do you bench test an ignition coil?

I dont have FB. Done away with that years ago. Look on YouTube and it will show you how, but put simply hook a 12v+ straight to the coil, a 12v- with a normally open momentary switch. Sparkplug hooked to the coil and 12v- hooked to the metal of the plug. . Activate the switch. Switch closed charges the coil, release and it discharges via the plug.
