Piddling with The Turd and I've fitted some 31's on some Gen 2 wheels I have. The 33's were gotten as take-off from a mechanics shop, for free.😁 For the spare I have an old 32 that will do fine as a spare, but it's an 11.50. Bows like crazy on the rim. Going to be great on the sand and mud when deflated though! But being so thick, I can't bolt it on. What to do?πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Simple, space out the tire carrier. I had some 2" square tubing left over from a project, perfect width to make a good base for the tire carrier.

What do you mean, appropriate? I have bigger, wider tires that will not bolt on to the stock tire carrier. These square tube spacers sit flat under the carriers itself, spreading the weight the entire length to the internal tire carrier support mount. It's held on with some Grade 8 70mm long bolts. Or I can buy a 2" aluminum wheel spacer. Then bolt that to the carrier. Then bolt the wheel to the aluminium spacer. I'm not hip to the aluminium spacer against metal in any use. Spare tire carrier, or road wheel. Aluminium and steel get angry with each other and corrode, so there's that. The 2" square tubing has worked well for me carrying the 37 on my Raider for about 4 years now. Wow, has it been that long already?

rxinhed, would using a small spacer (10mm or less) be reasonable to get scrub radius near zero (i.e. closer to stock on monties, and to help with more even tire wear) after switching tires and wheels to a "tall and skinny" combo? Also, which do you think is more pertinent: the increased steering effort with a larger scrub radius (positive or negative) or the increased unsprung mass and leverage created through the use of a wheel spacer or lower offset wheel?

I suppose it may be application dependent, since a crawler may want both a wide wheel with tall sidewalls, but also a minimal increase in steering effort. Alternatively, an overlander that stays on tarmac and smooth logging roads may prefer the traction/fuel economy benefits of switching to lighter/less wide wheels/tires and may never see increased maintenance from the increased steering effort/wear.

So, carrying on with what I did, I made the spacer shown above. I then used some 75mm bolts I got from a set of cylinder heads I had. They are rocker arm retaining bolts.
They are the perfect length.

Frank, I did not mean to detract from your mod, nor incite any riots. I don't care for wheel spacers, my opinion. I'm in arid country where the galvanic reaction of dissimilar metals, for this particular. However, almost all my rims are aluminum against steel drums or discs. It's a shrug moment. Carry on, friend.

Thanks, Russ. You just explained a quandary I am dealing with. Frank, I have reviewed your photos and believe the basic function is viable. I am with Russ in that spacers has a function, but...

In my case, I has a Daystar plastic container that mounts to my spare tire carrier.. I recently noted that the β€œspacers” used to hold the plastic box in place were loose. I grabbed my tire iron and gave the lug nuts a quick turn. One snapped and I was left with the plastic container held in place by 2 lug nuts.

While there are no contents in the container, it does pose a fix that needs to be addressed. Ultimately, it will be removed and discarded. And, that popular accessory will no longer be something I use or will endorse.

At issue is the mounting studs are aluminum. That brings up the question of dependable strength as noted by Russ.

Your situation appears to be steel on steel except for aluminum rims on steel.

In general, it should be not problem. However, it should be a point where periodic attention is paid to ensure snug fit and no bi-metallic corrosion is evident.

nicely done. i just shimmed it out with a stack of stainless washers. yours is a far more elegant solution.
