My transmission guy here in Brooklyn suggested VividRacing.com
I'll see if I can find his note.

I too have a 1989 MT Raider. At the moment, the tranny sounds like a rock tumbler.
I am hoping its just a bad throwout, or clutch part came loose.
Getting chirping now - need to deal with it asap.

Noise goes away when clutch pedal is in.
Shifts clean, no slipping. And i noticed at about 2k rpm the noise settles.

Found the note:

vividracing.com
bearing/seal/synchro kit
model # zmbk189ws

I haven't confirmed, so I leave that to you.

All the bearings and seals are standard parts available most anywhere. Do you really need syncros? Or just told you want them?

Hey Charlie,

I am convinced I have a clutch problem.
Tranny guy is convinced I have a tranny problem.
And of course, his take is while in there replace everything.
Which isn't the worst advice, when paying for labor.

I am replacing clutch myself soon and going from there.

That is one of the last persons I would trust. Vivid racing has nothing for these vehicles.
You really need to have a valid analysis of what is wrong and from what I read here, trust your instincts.
The only aspect of that transmission I am aware of having a problem is fasteners loosening on the rear mainshaft bearing retainer. Allows the mainshaft to move fore-aft with throttle changes in all but 4th gear.

If your transmission shifts well, do not break it.
If it has a bearing problem, that will be different in each gear and differing throttle.

A clutch release bearing, noise generally changes with foot on or off.

I would not pay thousands if it is just a $20 TO bearing.

The real decision for clutch work, pull the engine or the transmission. I think the engine is easier on that rig.
That transmission/Tcase is fargging heavy and does not want to sit on a jack. Because of the Tbar crossmember the trans needs to come forward.
