For those who have repaired or replaced Montero Gen 1 automatic transmissions, what do you think the best place is to look for a replacement? Is the Gen 2 auto transmission compatible?

The work is a bit over my head, and my mechanic would rather replace than try to fix.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Is this a 4 or 6 cyl unit? Generally no to a Gen 2 compatibility, but is yours a V6 there may be some option.

What is it doing wrong? These are Asian Warner transmissions and are as reliable as any made.
Is it simply low on fluid? I doubt it is simple as that.
Is the fluid a dark red or nasty black or brown?

I would search Car-part.com for used ones.
Buying a "New" one will just get you a re-manufactured unit with the finest Chinese high profit parts.

Thanks Charlie.

It is the V6 model, sorry I forgot to mention that.

It began to be "fussy" shifting into reverse, and then stopped shifting into reverse at all.
I then topped off the fluid a little, but this did not help.
Then, it began shifting into gears 1 - 3 at slightly higher rpms than usual, and will not shift into 4th while the gas pedal is pressed. I think it stays in 3rd if I am at high speed and release the pedal, but it may be shifting into 4th. The rpms do go way down, but as soon as I hit the gas, I know I am in 3rd. I do not "feel" or hear it shifting between 3rd and 4th if it is doing it when coasting/decelerating with my foot off the gas.

The next thing I am going to do is drain and replace the transmission fluid - I just got some Mitsubishi fluid.

Any other ideas are welcome, thank you!

If anything from a Gen 2 would be compatible it would be from an LS, this being the 3.0 in the earlier years.
I have not researched these to truly understand the compatibility.
The SR with the 3.5 is completely different and I have not looked at changes up through 97, they might have gone to electronic control as the 3.5 had.
At this time I am not much better with help, once I complete my current tasks I might get to look in the books more.
