A great deal of posting in the Toyota 4Runner & SUV forum has to do with tire choice. In most circumstances, the tires are the first part of an SUV that is exchanged for an OEM alternative.

In this thread, we will discuss the different set-ups by our membership and provide a place for a collective experience with many different configurations of late model SUV's.

Following is the example (using my 4Runner):

1998 4Runner
SAW / ATS / Downey / Bilstein suspension
Lifted 2.0"
V6 / 5spd / 4.10 / rear air locker
Stock 16X7 alloy wheels
285/75/16LT Goodyear MT/R Radial Tires @ 36PSI X 4 (street), 13PSI X 4 (off road)

Fitment Problems: Insignificantly rubs rear lower corner of front fenderwell in high speed / slight turn desert running or similar street situation.

Wheels: No issues, stock rims on this configuration clear all.

On Road: Good to Fair handling, some growling around corners, loud (but only slightly more than BFG A/T TA's by opinion), highway noise is moderate to high, fair high speed (75 mph) handling, acceptable wear for type of tire (65% of tread remaining at 12,000 mi. plus.)

Off Road: Excellent overall tire off road, at lower pressures conforms to rock surfaces uniformly, sidewalls have no deep cuts or pinches, minimal chunking on tread, bead has stayed intact, no significant mud testing.

Overall: For a true all / dual purpose, this one is a trade-off. You will give up high speed highway performance. Like any purpose built off-road tire, this one squirms like a prom date on the pavement but shines off-road and hasn't let me down despite a framing nail piercing one of the rear treads and being broken off in the tire for at least 2k mi.!!!! Recommended for anyone who will see 20 to 50 % off-road use.


So, there should be some guidelines for this thread:
  • 1. Try to describe the configuration as closely to the example as possible.
    2. Use opinions formed on your setup in the Fitment through Overall comments, stick to fact on the actual configuration.
    3. Have fun, no flaming allowed, try to keep questions to PM's and Email.
    4. Refer future questions to this FAQ when possible.

Suspension recently changed to:

OME 881 spring and N91S shock (front) with one 10MM trim packer installed in the assembly and one Revtek top-out spacer.

OME 891 and N86 shock (rear.)

Minor rubbing on front pinch weld under heavy front loading. Otherwise no changes to above commentary.

driving habits are about like this: 50% highway, 35% street, 15% trail.

no fitment issues b/c of ATS arms and 1" body lift.

STREET: I have been really impressed with the street characteristics of these MT tires. The noise level of the tires when I got them was similar to the noise level of my old BFG AT KOs. Granted, the noise has been increasing in the past 5k miles, but they are still barely heard at highway speeds. The wet traction has been fantastic, both at high speeds and low speeds.

TRAIL: these tires have been good. They are very good in the mud, they clean really well. On the rocks they have been okay, but the sidewalls are not very thick so that is their weak point. We dont get much snow in GA, so I cannot report on their performance in snow.

OVERALL: these are great tires for the weekend-warrior like myself. They hold up extremely well on the street and they are very competitive on the trail.

1.5in downey HD coils in rear/no lift in front, not even tbar crank. Stock length Rancho 9000s front and rear.
V6/Auto/factory 4.88

32x11.5 Pirelli Scorpion ATs @32psi x4 (street) 10psi-17psi x4 (off road)

Fitment problems: insignificantly rubs when reversing and at full lock. No problems off road.

On road: Absolutely nothing to complain about. Noise is slightly higher than normal street tires, but my 2002 corolla has louder road noise (thanks unibody construction). Never hydroplaned (yet), will get at least 40k miles out of these tires.

Off road: Seems fine to me on the rocks and in the sand. They've taken me everywhere my practically stock truck wants to go.

Overall: good tire for anybody who doesn't want to spend the money for BFG ATs or step up to a mud tire. I'm graduating to muds, next.

Still stock front upper control arms (which determines droop)

285/75R16 Goodyear MT/R on 16x8 "Ultra aluminum mod" wheels (look like A/R Outlaw II), 4.25" backspacing. Typically 35 psi highway, 13 psi hard trails, 11 psi ice racing. Used year-round on daily driver.

Fitment: Since stock backspacing was 4 3/8", I stuck with nearly the same b.s. but with 1" wider wheel so the tires stick out almost 1" farther. I got significant rubbing when steering was turned halfway before I did trimming/pounding. To fix this the body seam in the rear of the front wheel wells was hammered flat and the plastic over that seam was cut away. Now it's extremely rare that I get any rubbing. They fit into the rear wheel wells at full stuff but I bent all of the upper lip upward at a 45+ degree angle with a crescent wrench so they fit.

Wheels: I love the 4.25" backspacing and the 8" width. I don't like the "Ultra" brand wheels only because they don't have clearcoating on them. Their appearance after a couple years is poor due to corrosion. They've endured my abuse off-road very well and have multiple scrapes and even 2 dented areas now.

I also tried to fit some 16x8 steel wheels, but they wouldn't fit over the brake caliper. Some are said to fit, though.

Tires on road: Good handling. Minor squeeling in hard corners. Good hydroplaning resistance. First set lasted 45K miles. Somewhat soft rubber compound which is a perfect compromise. Quiet when new and get slightly louder as they wear - not bad though. Need rebalancing every 20K miles. Loss of a couple mpg on highway (also due to size). Max speed rating of 90 mph. Surprisingly good traction in all types of snow including hard packed - definitely better than all-seasons. Won season points trophy when ice racing with MT/R's on rough ice.

Tires Off Road: Very good performance on rocks. Very durable sidewall - only one puncture (my only flat) after 75K miles on MT/R's with a sharp pointed rock. Never took it off the bead despite many times I should have. No difference noticed when siped. No chunking. No real mud testing.

Overall: Perfect tire for a compromise between on-road and off-road when you want to take your daily driver on tough trails. It's not for you if you'll rarely go off-road -- too many compromises on-road. It's often used on dedicated trail rigs, although a softer compound might be nice for buggies.

2000 4Runner SR5 with LTD style flares. Stock suspension, stock height.

265/75 X 16 Dunlop Dueler RT's on US Wheel #84 Daytona rims ( similar to the black Rockcrawlers ) 16" X 7" with 4.00" backspacing.

Some rubbing on the back of the front inner fenders at about 2/3 steering lock that's worse under braking. No rubbing in back even with the wheels stuffed.

I like this setup. Much better than the stock Goodyears in every way. Good in the snow and quiet on pavement for as agressive as they are. Seem to be wearing very well.

I'll probably get something less agressive and put them on my stock rims for summer highway use though.

Fitment:
Inner fender liner was removed and replaced with rubber floor liner. Fender seam was ground flat and hammered. Rear frame rubbing is slight, but apparent at full compression. Otherwise tires stuff well.

Wheels:
Backspacing is key here. The wheels are darn heavy, but they take a beating. Part of the balance issues may be the wheels, but who can argue with $45 a piece without the pride stripe?

On-Road:
They have been an absolute bear to get and keep balanced for any period of time. I have lifetime balance and go in almost monthly to have it redone. Right now there is about 25k on the tires with only mildly noticeable wear. Decent growl with the windows down. So far I have been really impressed with them in snow and rain, way better than the BFG AT's they replaced. Put 13k on them this summer in 3 months, lots of highway time.

Off-Road:
Great tire on rocks at low pressure. Not a good mud tire with my anemic engine. Toasted one sidewall on basically a gravel road. Otherwise they do sick things on rocks with grabbing every last edge.

Overall:
Good tire for my purposes. Wheeled it hard this summer all over the southwest without issue and it still drives tolerably on the highway. Off-Road and on-road it is a compromise though. Not a great street tire and I think a Swamper would do a lot better in pure mud. It DD's decent, wheels great and looks cool even to people who have no idea.

Next tire purchase may get me away from them though. The price is a little steep for something that has had out of round issues. Either these or Krawlers go on next.

Background:
When the 225s that came on my truck wore out, I decided to upgrade to something larger and more aggressive. My truck is a daily driver that spends 90% of its time on pavement. I wanted a tire that looked good, performed well on road in all conditions (I live in the northeast, so that means rain, snow, slush, ice, etc.), performed well off-road, and would get good tread wear. I did a lot of research, and after reading a terrific review on off-road.com I decided to go with Bridgestone Dueler ATs. All I had left to do was decide on a size. I talked with a few people, and found out that an 11.5" wide tire is the widest I could fit without serious rubbing. I ended up using Wild Bill's rig as a model and went with 32/11.5-15 on my stock 15x7 alloys.

Fit and Rubbing
The tires fit great. They don't rub at all in the front, and only slightly in the back at full compression (definitely not enough to worry about). The tires fit well on the stock 15x7 alloys, and even aired down to 15PSI, I don't worry about their width or losing a bead.

Tire Performance - On Pavement
I couldn't be happier with these tires. They easily the best tires I've driven. Dry grip is very good, though I don't drive my truck like it's a race car. In the rain and slush, the tread design keeps rubber on the road - even in standing water I've never hydroplaned or lost traction. In the snow the tread is aggressive enough to maintian good traction. Obviously, I still drive carefully, but these tires make it much easier to get around. I've only ever gotten my truck stuck once, and it was in the snow. I was in about 15" of unpacked powder, and the tread tended to fill up with snow. I didn't know the snow was that deep, but once I got in there, I didn't expect to get it - it was that kind of snow. No tire without studs is going to do much in the ice, but these aren't bad. With a light foot and some caution, I can get around just fine, even in 2WD.

Tire Performance - On the Trail
I was am very impressed with these tires off-road as well. They even impressed a couple of guides at Paragon Adventure Park. If aired down properly they offer great traction on the rocks, wet or dry. In the mud, they do surprisingly well. I didn't think an AT would fare well in the mud, but these do all right. I've never been held back by my tires - to me, that's a sign of a good tire.

Conclusion
These tires may never win any off-road competitions, nor will they last longer than your truck. But, if you're looking for a good, all around tire that can handle lots of terrain and conditions, I cannot say enough about the Dueler ATs. I'm expecting to get between 55 and 60k miles out of my set, and they have seen a wide variety of terrain and driving condition. They are yet to disappoint me. I'd buy another set in a heartbeat, and I'd recommend them to friends and family without a second thought.

I have no rubbing issues since I have installed the 1" body lift.

STREET: They act like my Goodyear MT/R's did. They are decent in the rain, snow, ect. They've begun to get louder as they wear, but I don't mind the noise.

TRAIL: Mud: Work like a champ. This is where they really shine. Rocks: The compound of the tire is very soft and sticky, so they do pretty well on the rocks also.

OVERALL: Great tire for offroad use. Would I buy these tires again? NO! They are a pain to balance and they weigh a ton since they are a 10 ply tire. My next choice will probalby be the MT/R again or the BFG Mud Terrain.

Fitment Problems: significant rubbing rear lower corner of front fenderwell, had to cut out 1" then reweld seam to give clearance. No rubbing issues in the rear, except for the stock SR5 flare that I needed to cut the lower front part off. Added an 1 1/2" RB BL to help with tire clearance.

On Road: Better than stock handling, highway noise is moderate to high, good high speed (90 mph) handling, with 18 psi @ 60 mph handling was very stable, unlike my stock rims & BFG AT's with 20 psi they were very wobbly.

Off Road: Excellent overall tire off road, at lower pressures conforms to rock surfaces uniformly, sidewalls have no deep cuts or pinches, bead has stayed intact obviously, no significant mud testing.

Overall: Edit*(04/18/04) I'm still surprised on how well they have held up, haven't needed to re-balance them yet. My Initial balancing took 2.70, 4.25, 4.50, & 4.75 oz of lead. Not bad considering my BFG AT's took quite a bit more and several trips back to the shop, before it was done right. I haven't taken them off yet to put my other set of tire for street driving.

06/26/04; Don't drive through heavy brush out in the dezert! I ended up poking a branch through the inner sidewall(upper treaded portion) Besides that the tires have held up very well. For the street, I'm still running 36 PSI, for the easier trails 18 PSI, on the rocks 13 PSI, but I may go lower if needed. I was told that at max pressure, they are quieter on the street, I'll test this and give an update.

Update; None of the bolts holding the beadlocks ever came loose, Climbing rocks, 10 to 12 psi worked the best. For gas mileage on the street, I'm running 40 psi, no noticable reduction in noise, but you do feel the bumps more. I can go higher, since the tires are rated for 50 psi, but I'm sure the ride would be even rougher as well. Last few outings have chunked the tires, also lost the front wheel weights, but since I wrote down the amount it was easily replaced. I have yet to re-balance them, still riding smooth at speed.

An update to my earlier post... I'm now running 33/12.5 MTs with ATS arms.

In the front, the tires rub on the frame rails under full turn and moderate compression (less than full stuff). In the back, tires rub slightly at full stuff, haven't looked to see where they are rubbing though.

On road, noise is moderate for an MT. Grip is good in dry/rain, haven't had them in the snow yet. After about 6k miles, they are showing early signs of wear.

I've only had them off-road a couple of times, but so far they perform great in mud, dirt, rocks, whatever. Have to wait to comment on their durability, but so far, no slices or chunks.

Fitment Issues
Regular driving I have no problems what so ever. Will turn lock to lock without any trouble while on the road. Will rub on the inner back fenderwell when suspension is articulated. Need to modify the fenderwell, or do a bit more lift (SL vs. BL...Hmmmm we'll see)

Pavement Characteristics
I've noted some sidewall flex while driving high speed (60-70mph) and taking sharp corners running about 30-32psi (I live in the mountains). Not a big deal, and doesn't cause it to get squirly, but it's something to get used to. Mild to moderate highway noise, but certainly not awfull. I don't need to crank the stereo too much. Great stopping and gripping. Have about 20K miles on them, and can barely see any wear. No cuffing or chunking.

Off-Road Characteristics
Tires handle beautifully. I have yet to get stuck because the tires weren't doing their job. In mud they clear fairly well as long as I keep them spinning. Gravel is a cinch..With lots-o-lugs, they grab and hold well. Crawling rock has not been a problem either. I had a bead separation which led to multiple roll-over on another vehicle due to low pressures, and now I'm a bit leary to take tires down below 15lbs. There is still good side-wall flex and tread wrap. Rubber is somewhat soft and grabs well.

Other considerations
The Big-O tires come with a lifetime (pro-rated) tire repair/replacement guarantee that I have not found with any other company. If I break it, and they can't repair it, I get a new tire. They also do free rotation and balance every 3K miles. Where I live, there are plenty of Big-O shops around if I need one. The price may be a bit more (I think I pain $750 for all 4 mounted and balanced 2 years ago) but to me it's worth it. I would certainly do it again.

Now days, my truck is a toy, and I don't have to daily drive it. I would say 30% street and 70% trail. ( I refuse to trailer my rigs...run-what-ya-brung).

I think the largest size they make is a 35", but could be wrong.

on road: 27 psi, loud, rough ride, flat spots after being parked all night, no rub at full lock (drivers side inner fender gone, pass side inner fender trimed)

off road: 8 psi, great grip on the rocks, havent been in any mud with them yet (dont plan to) definatly a tough tire, though a large nail worked its way in between the lugs and did put a plugable hole in the tire, minor frame rubbing in the rear at full compression(no inner fenders out back either), also minor rubbing on the pinch weld in the front fender but not audible and only noticable because of marks on the tires

just like others have said back spacing is the key here, these 10.5 LTB's stick out from the fender about 1" farther than my street tires with are 32x11.50 on the stock wheels, if i have more backspacing on these wheels theres NO WAY i could run this size tire with the small amount of lift i have

Fitment problems: Rubs front firewall slightly at full compression.

Wheels: No serious problems. Small annoying issue is the center caps stick way out and bend easy.

On Road: Good handling tire. Slightly noisy. Work very well on wet roads and in the snow. Very good wear from the tires.

Off Road: Acceptable in most offroad terrains except mud. These tires have done really well in snowy conditions on slick rock around Moab.

Overall: I really like these tires. These are my daily driver tires and work very well. Offroad they work as good as any other AT tire that I have seen. I only had one major problem, on the Hole in the Rock trail I got a piece of sand stone stuck between the rim and tire and nearly ruined the tire. I think that this was a freak thing and haven't heard of it happening to anyone else. I would recommend this tire for anyone that wants a good daily driver tire and wants drive offroad on the weekends.

265/80R16 Super Swamper TSL Radials @ 40 psi street, 13 psi (yes the size is correct)

Fitment Problems: Rubbing on firewall during full compression. Rubs rear bumper on full compression.

Wheels: Stock wheels. I have found these wheels to be very good for offroading.

On Road: Handling is vague and stopping distances increase. They are very noisy. They do well on wet roads and very good in the snow. I would not recommend going over 75 mph with these. Tire wear is terrible, I will be lucky to 12k out of them. Also, the tireshop told me these tires are a bear to balance.

Off Road: Awesome tire offroad. Obviously they do very well in the mud. Their ability to clean themselves is amazing. They also perform very well in snow and on the rocks. The side lugs work very well for clawing and gaining traction. I've been nothing but impressed with them.

Overall: I can only recommend this tire as an offroad only setup. I only use them for big trips like going to Moab or exploring areas where I need lots of traction. Since they wearout extremely fast I don't recommend as a daily driver tire.

Hey guys, finally replace the Dunflops on my Purple People Eater, I got the Dueler A/T REVO 265/70-16 with UNI-T AQII Technology, whatever that is. Best rated tire that I could find. Bridgestone Revo 265/70-16

Onroad: some strong tracking at high speeds. They squeal easily. The tire noise is not excessive but they're certainly not quite. Tread life is moderate.

Offroad: perform quite well on rocks and snow. Havn't tried a lot of muddy trails yet. Sand ability is suspect, although blame should way more heavilly on the lack of 4wd due to broken autohub.

I would only recomend for a more aggressive dry terrain offroader.

Wheels: No issues, stock rims on this configuration clear all.

On Road: Good handling, highway noise is moderate to high (much more than my stock tires - but I REALLY LIKE that!), AWESOME wear for a M/T (25-30% of tread remaining at 40,000 mi. plus.)

Off Road: No real experience yet

Overall: This is my daily driver and it runs great. The tires are fine and will most likely hit 55,000+ miles. However, I have new rims and tires on order that will be mounted the first week of August. So I will never know how much more the ProComps would've lasted.

SIDE NOTE: I'll be selling my stock wheels, my 31" ProComps & 4 BRAND NEW stock tires. I will be posting photos soon as well as pricing. They will be REALLY cheap!

Tires: 32 11.50 BFG Mud terrains on factory 15x7 aluminum rims
I love these tires. No problems rubbing. Excellant tires on the trail/make your own trail. Less noise on the pavement than my wife's BFG AT KO's. Makes the truck handle much better than the factory 31 10.50 that I bought it with.
Mud's stink on snow and I get horrilbe gas mileage. Less power as well.

'99 4Runner ARB lockers, OME N86/N91 SC, Daystar 1.5" and airbags, Camburg arms, Stock wheels, 4.10 gears, automatic, Lots of other junk

285/75/16 Dueler AT Revos: inside fender trimming and pounding, Increased steering stops. Rubs a bit here and there when flexed out. Rides pretty quiet and comfortable. Good wear. Great traction in the rocks.

265/75/16 Dueler AT 693: Quieter than the Revo but niether are loud and I'm picky. Very minor rub with no suspension mods. Great ride and wear on the street. Just as great in the rocks. These LT tires have strong sidewalls and good puncture resistance.

265/70/16 Wrangler RTS: Quiet on the street. Surprisingly decent traction offroad. Poor wear and ride when they've worn some. Stock size so no fittment issues.

I hope it's ok to ask on a "sticky" thread but because I'm coming off a Suburban when gas was $3.00+ I still have a concern over gas mileage. How much difference in MPG does an aggressive tread affect? I don't do a whole lot of off road (I do every weekend)but when I do, 4x4 is definitely needed here in the northwest as much is mud because it rains often with snow in winter. I'm thinking of going to Costco. Here's their tire selection: Costco tires - If you don't mind, what are your opinions? Metric tire sizes confuse me. I'm used to inches. *edit - I hear these tires are great!

im running a stock 94 3.0 5 spd with 33x10.50's the only mod i had to do was take off the running boards ( ugly in my opinion anyway ) and take off about 1/2 an inch at the rear bottom corner of the front bumper.

no lift no problem i have no rubbing problems even at full lock in reverse up or downhill <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />

ok you guys talked me into the Bridgestone REVO's. Firestone tire store is having a buy 3 get one free and $75 rebate. I'm going for the 265/75/16 on my stock 2002. I'll edit with fitment issues, etc.

Edit -
1. Rubs only driver's side running board on pavement. I might as well take both off.

I was unable to edit my post. This is just a FYI: Be aware that these tires pick up a lot of gravel and hangs on to them FOR DAYS. I find my rig flinging rocks for several days on the highway after 4x4 runs. However, the tires are the best performing tires I've ever owned - in all weather/terrain conditions.

i have had a set of 33x12.50s on 15x10 wheels on my 92 4runner that is completly stock no lift at all with minor rubbing on the street only front at full lock and off road they rubbed quit a bit in the back but my runner has a lot of rear end sag. i had a set of 33x12.50s on 15x8s and they only rubbed at full lock off road and none in the back. now i have a set of 32x11.50s maxxis bighorns on the stock 15x7 alloy rims and have no issues at all. ow ya the maxxis tires are awsome if your looking for a new set of tires i would really recomend them.

Yeah I bought my AT Revos after what I read on hear they seem to work great haven't had any real issues a little pricey nothing to really complain about though.

Not much to say about my rig its just simple and effective. I had to hammer back the floor boards in the front wheel wells to make a bit more room for the 34" LTB's because they measure a full 33.4" in height where as a 33 is a inch shorter (32.2"). Other than that I can't belive how well 33 & 34 inch tires fit with only 2" of lift.

I really like the LTB's for there price, size and traction but they wear fast due to a very soft rubber compound. They have a 4 ply side wall and 6 ply's under the tread surface so when aired down and with the soft tread compound they conform to surfaces really well.
The Thornbirds on the other hand are very hard so they last longer but it makes traction very poor. I live in SD so during the winter months the Thornbirds really suck. Not very snow friendly. They are a 6 ply tire that runs from bead to bead so aired down the side walls don't flex much at all. The other disapointment is with the 10.50 size the largest lugs are very small compaired to other size Thornbids. I'll never buy these again.

Ride is like water skiing on glass, very smooth and quiet.

I've read the reports on Tire Rack and a few other sites, but wanted to get an opinion on what most are buying for mostly street use when replacing the OEM tires? I currently have Michelin Cross Terrain and like them a lot, though they're expensive.

Fitment Problems: Significantly rubs (actually destroys) rear lower corner of front fenderwell in high speed whoops or off camber situations. Significant trimming corrects.

Wheels: No issues. Tough as they come.

On Road: Don't drive it on highway much but they howl like a pack of hungry wolves @ 60 and sound like an angry bear @ 35. I love it! White knuckle ride on icy roads, unstoppable in snow. Minor flat spots after parking overnight or longer on warm ground or warm tires. Subsides within 10 miles.

Off Road: Eat up wet/dry rocks and mud for breakfast...no chunking. The ickiest of the sticky. Virtually indestructible. Breaks off sharp ice and roots stumps with no damage. On loose dirt/silt hill climbs they dig like madness when forward momentum is lost but reverse pulls right back out of the hole 99% of the time. Forget about going anywhere in loose sand without significant momentum and wicked low air pressure.

Overall: Not for highway use!! 10k miles is a gracious estimate. if you want the ultimate in a 33" (actually measures almost 35) offroad tire...it's these or Boggers.
